Located in the southwestern suburbs of Paris, France, Clamart is a commune. A distance of 8.7 kilometers separates it from Paris’ center. There are two parts to Clamart, separated by a forest: Bas Clamart, the historical center, and Petit Clamart, developed in the 1960s to replace pea fields with urbanization.
History
French gastronomy owes its name to the city. As a side dish, “à la Clamart” features peas. The season’s first peas were found at Clamart, near Paris’s central marketplace (Les Halles).
A French Air Force Lieutenant-Colonel Jean Bastien-Thiry organized an assassination attempt against French President Charles de Gaulle on 22 August 1962. A barrage of submachine gun fire greeted de Gaulle’s black Citroen D.S. 19 as it sped through Petit-Clamart. His entourage, including his wife, survived the attempt without serious injuries or casualties, while the attempt’s perpetrators were eventually arrested and prosecuted. Jean Bastien-Thiry led the effort to assassinate and was executed by the firing squad in 1963, the last firing squad execution in France.
