Colmar is a town in northern France, close to the German border, located in the Grand Est region. Half-timbered medieval and early Renaissance buildings line the cobblestone streets in the old town. At the center of Place de la Cathédrale is the Gothic 13th-century church Eglise Saint-Martin. Riesling and Gewürztraminer wines are specialized in local vineyards along the Alsace Wine Route.

The city’s many attractions are its well-preserved old town, numerous architectural landmarks, and museums, including the Unterlinden Museum, which houses the Isenheim Altarpiece.

The Alsatian Wine Route passes through Colmar, the “capital of Alsatian wine” (capitale des vins d’Alsace).

Old Town & Place de la Cathédrale

A maze of cobblestone streets lined with traditional Alsatian burghers’ houses makes up the Old Town of Colmar, which seems right out of a storybook. Near the Place de la Cathédrale, this well-preserved historic area is between the Rue des Têtes, the Rue des Clefs, and the Rue des Marchands.

Musée Unterlinden

This exceptional museum displays a diverse collection of artwork in a 13th-century building (once a Dominican convent). Especially noteworthy is the building’s beautifully preserved double-arcaded cloister.

Eglise des Dominicains

Built in the 14th century, the Dominican Church is an excellent example of early Gothic architecture. Dominican preachers’ lives are reflected in the church’s simple and serene architecture.

Koïfhus (Ancienne Douane)

Adjacent to the Place du Marché-aux-Fruits, the former fruit market site of medieval Douane, the Koïfhus had a strategic location in medieval times. Once Colmar’s economic and political center, the Ancienne Douane (Old Customs House) dates from the 15th century.

Quartier de la Krutenau (Petite Venise)

This charming neighborhood is just past Rue Saint-Jean, with canal-side eateries, quaint pedestrian bridges, and half-timbered houses. The river is lined with lush greenery and willow trees, while vibrant potted flowers adorn the homes, adding to the pleasant atmosphere.

Quartier des Tanneurs

You’ll find the Quartier des Tanneurs (Tanner’s Quarter) within walking distance of the Old Customs House. Tanners created leather products in the appropriately named quarter. Drying out the skins was done on the upper floors of the houses.

Quai de la Poissonnerie

Old fishmonger’s district where fishermen lived eleven centuries ago surrounds the Quai de la Poissonnerie. Fishing was a booming business in Colmar then, and professional fishermen were influential.

Eglise Saint Martin

Located in Colmar’s Old Town on the Place de la Cathédrale, the Saint Martin Collegiate Church is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. In addition to its High Gothic choir and other ornate details, the church dates from the 13th and 14th centuries.

Eglise Saint Matthieu

This church was once Colmar’s Protestant church. As is typical of Alsace’s mendicant orders, the building has an austere style similar to the Dominican Church. Over a century later, it was completed by the Franciscans, who began construction in 1292.

Musée du Jouet de Colmar

There are more than 1,000 toys displayed at the Colmar Toy Museum, dating back to the 19th century. There are dolls, stuffed animals, miniature train sets, model cars, rocking horses, and tricycles for visitors to enjoy.
