Colmar Overview

Colmar is a town in northern France, close to the German border, located in the Grand Est region. Half-timbered medieval and early Renaissance buildings line the cobblestone streets in the old town. At the center of Place de la Cathédrale is the Gothic 13th-century church Eglise Saint-Martin. Riesling and Gewürztraminer wines are specialized in local vineyards along the Alsace Wine Route.

The city’s many attractions are its well-preserved old town, numerous architectural landmarks, and museums, including the Unterlinden Museum, which houses the Isenheim Altarpiece.

The Alsatian Wine Route passes through Colmar, the “capital of Alsatian wine” (capitale des vins d’Alsace).

History

The first mention of Colmar appears in the chronicle of Charlemagne concerning the Saxon wars. This was the location of the 884 diets held by Carolingian Emperor Charles the Fat. As a result of Emperor Frederick II’s decree in 1226, Colmar became a free imperial city. As part of the Décapole city league, it was incorporated in 1354. Long after its northern neighbors of Strasbourg and Sélestat, the city adopted the Protestant Reformation in 1575. It was taken by the Swedish army during the Thirty Years’ War in 1632 and held for two years. As soon as the Schoeman family arrived, the first library was established in the town. During 1635, Imperialist forces spoiled the city’s harvest while residents shot at them from the walls.

In 1673, France conquered Nijmegen under King Louis XIV and officially ceded it in the Treaties of Nijmegen of 1679. The city was devastated by a cholera epidemic in 1854. Colmar and the rest of Alsace were incorporated into Alsace-Lorraine in 1871 due to the Franco-Prussian War. As part of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, the area returned to France after World War I was annexed by Nazi Germany by 1940 and then returned to French control after World War II. In 1947-1977, the Popular Republican Movement ruled Colmar; in 1977-1995, the Union for French Democracy ruled it; and in 1995, the Union for a Popular Movement led it.

In 1863, the Colmar Treasure was discovered here, a hoard of precious objects hidden by Jews during the Black Death.

Geography

At 48.08°N, 7.36°E, on the Lauch River, a tributary of Ill, Colmar is 64 kilometers (40 mi) south-southwest of Strasbourg. A canal connects it to the Rhine in the east, directly east of the Vosges.

The city had 69,105 residents in 2017, and the Colmar metropolitan area had 199,234 residents in 2018. With 211,312 residents in 2017, Colmar-Ribeauvillé is the center of the arrondissement of Colmar-Ribeauvillé.

Climate

The city of Colmar is characterized by an oceanic climate (Köppen: Cfb), but the latter is significantly modified by its location inland, with cold, dry winters and hot, wet summers.

Population

70,284 (2015)

Transport

Colmar is served by the small regional airport Colmar.

Several regional destinations are accessible from Gare de Colmar, including Strasbourg, Mulhouse, Besançon, and Zürich. The Freiburg–Colmar international railway once connected Colmar with Freiburg im Breisgau, in Germany, across the Rhine. Breisach-Neuf-Brisach’s railway bridge over the Rhine was destroyed in 1945 and never rebuilt.

Economy

Tourism is Colmar’s primary economic strength, which makes it an affluent city. In addition, it is also the headquarters of several large companies: Timken (European office), Liebherr (French office), Leitz (French office), and Capsugel France (a division of Pfizer).

Since 1947, Colmar has hosted what is now believed to be the biggest and most important commercial event in Alsace, the Foire aux vins d’Alsace (Alsatian wine fair).

Air Alsace’s head office was located on the grounds of Colmar Airport when it existed.

Culture

The Japanese animated film Howl’s Moving Castle was inspired by Colmar’s cityscape (and that of neighboring Riquewihr). Is the Order a Rabbit? Anime scenes feature this location as well.

Is Colmar worth visiting?

Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Colmar

Old Town & Place de la Cathédrale

A maze of cobblestone streets lined with traditional Alsatian burghers’ houses makes up the Old Town of Colmar, which seems right out of a storybook. Near the Place de la Cathédrale, this well-preserved historic area is between the Rue des Têtes, the Rue des Clefs, and the Rue des Marchands.

Musée Unterlinden

This exceptional museum displays a diverse collection of artwork in a 13th-century building (once a Dominican convent). Especially noteworthy is the building’s beautifully preserved double-arcaded cloister.

Eglise des Dominicains

Built in the 14th century, the Dominican Church is an excellent example of early Gothic architecture. Dominican preachers’ lives are reflected in the church’s simple and serene architecture.

Koïfhus (Ancienne Douane)

Adjacent to the Place du Marché-aux-Fruits, the former fruit market site of medieval Douane, the Koïfhus had a strategic location in medieval times. Once Colmar’s economic and political center, the Ancienne Douane (Old Customs House) dates from the 15th century.

Quartier de la Krutenau (Petite Venise)

This charming neighborhood is just past Rue Saint-Jean, with canal-side eateries, quaint pedestrian bridges, and half-timbered houses. The river is lined with lush greenery and willow trees, while vibrant potted flowers adorn the homes, adding to the pleasant atmosphere.

Quartier des Tanneurs

You’ll find the Quartier des Tanneurs (Tanner’s Quarter) within walking distance of the Old Customs House. Tanners created leather products in the appropriately named quarter. Drying out the skins was done on the upper floors of the houses.

Quai de la Poissonnerie

Old fishmonger’s district where fishermen lived eleven centuries ago surrounds the Quai de la Poissonnerie. Fishing was a booming business in Colmar then, and professional fishermen were influential.

Eglise Saint Martin

Located in Colmar’s Old Town on the Place de la Cathédrale, the Saint Martin Collegiate Church is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. In addition to its High Gothic choir and other ornate details, the church dates from the 13th and 14th centuries.

Eglise Saint Matthieu

This church was once Colmar’s Protestant church. As is typical of Alsace’s mendicant orders, the building has an austere style similar to the Dominican Church. Over a century later, it was completed by the Franciscans, who began construction in 1292.

Musée du Jouet de Colmar

There are more than 1,000 toys displayed at the Colmar Toy Museum, dating back to the 19th century. There are dolls, stuffed animals, miniature train sets, model cars, rocking horses, and tricycles for visitors to enjoy.
