The commune of Colombes is located in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, France, and a distance of 10.6 kilometers separates it from the center of Paris. The city of Colombes ranked 53rd in terms of population in 2019.
Name
Colombes comes from the Latin column (Old French Colombe), which means “column.” There was either a megalithic column used by a druidic cult in ancient times, which stood in Colombes until it was destroyed during the French Revolution or a set of columns in an atrium in a Gallo-Roman villa also located in Colombes.
History
Two-thirds of Colombes’ territory was detached on 13 March 1896 and became Bois-Colombes (literally “Colombes Woods”). The commune of La Garenne-Colombes was formed on 2 May 1910 from 19% of Colombes’ (reduced) territory. Due to this, the region of Colombes has shrunk by two-thirds from its size before 1896. Transport
Four stations serve Colombes: Colombes, Le Stade, La Garenne-Colombes, and Gare Les Vallées on the Transilien Paris – Saint-Lazare suburban rail line.

Sport
Construction of the stadium began in 1907. At the Olympic Stadium of Colombes, officially named Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir, the 1924 Summer Olympics opened, and several events were held. In 1938, the arena was expanded to accommodate 60,000 spectators for the World Cup. After Paris’ 49,000-seat Parc des Princes was restored in 1972, the stadium lost its significance. Three of the stadium’s four grandstands were torn down due to decay in the 1990s, reducing the stadium’s capacity to 7,000. Renovations have raised the total to 14,000 today.
In November 2017, it was home to Racing 92, currently playing in France’s Top 14, but Racing has since relocated to Nanterre’s new U Arena.
Yves-du-Manoir remains the home of the fourth-division football club, RCF Paris. During the Summer Olympics of 2024, the stadium will be used for field hockey games.
