Château de Compiègne

Since the time of Charles V in 1374, this magnificent neoclassical palace has served as a residence and hunting lodge for the royal family. In the middle of the 18th century, Louis XV reworked the entire estate and gave it the imposing exteriors we see today.

Clairière de l’Armistice

This clearing in the Forest of Compiègne witnessed two important events in 20th-century history. German negotiators used a carriage on Martial Foch’s private train to sign the Armistice that ended the First World War in 1918.

Beaux Monts

Starting in the château’s gardens, the avenue rises to a 122-meter-high lookout point. There’s no better time to come than autumn when the russet foliage is most beautiful.

Parc du Palais Imperial

Like the interior, the gardens were designed by Louis-Martin Berhthault to replace an earlier design by the revered Ange-Jacques Gabriel.

Forest of Compiegne

the forest sweeps out from the southeast of the town, and it was here that Charles V, Napoleon III, and other kings and emperors went hunting. With more than 14,400 hectares of low hills, it is vast.

Hôtel de Ville

Although it is not much you can do here as a working town hall, it is worth pondering from the front gardens due to its spired belfry.

Museum of the History of the Figurine

This massive hoard of figurines was initially displayed at the town hall. The showpiece is a fantastic diorama of the Battle of Waterloo, assembled in 1931.

Église Saint-Jacques

It is located on the Way of St James pilgrimage route, which makes it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the late 15th and 16th centuries, chapels, a bell tower (the tallest in Compiègne), and the upper part of the nave were added.

Musée Antoine-Vivenel

Dedicated to the donor of the first collections in 1839, Compiègne’s museum of fine arts and archaeology is named after him. The group has expanded through donations, government deposits, and local excavations since the museum moved to the Hôtel de Songeons-Bicquilley.

Jardin des Remparts

From the 1100s to the 1600s, Compiègne was enclosed by walls that were torn down when they were no longer necessary to allow the town to grow. However, a beautiful trace can be found in a secret garden along Rue des Fossés.
