Name
Courbevoie means “curved highway” in Latin, supposedly referring to the Roman road from Paris to Normandy, which took a sharp turn to climb the hill over which it was built.
History
When King Henry IV’s royal coach fell into the Seine in 1606 while being transported by ferry, a wooden bridge was constructed crossing the river at Courbevoie. A stone bridge was rebuilt during the eighteenth century, and a metal bridge was built in 1946 to replace it.
From 1658 until 1789, Jean-Baptiste Forne’s Convent of the Penitents was located in Courbevoie. A barracks of the Swiss Guard of the monarchy was also situated in the town.
