The commune of Créteil is located in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, Île-de-France. 11.7 km from Paris’s center, it is located in the suburbs. It is also the seat of the Arrondissement of Créteil and the prefecture of the Val-de-Marne département.
Name
In the martyrology written by a monk named Usuard in 865, Créteil was recorded as Cristoilum. Ialo (meaning “clearing, glade,” “place of”) is suffixed to the pre-Latin radical crist, whose meaning remains ambiguous. As a cognate of Latin crista and modern French crête, some believe crist means “ridge”, so Cristoilum would mean “clearing on the ridge” or “place on the ridge.” Because Créteil was home to a very ancient Christian community and Saint Agoard and Agilbert of Créteil were martyred around AD 400, the traditional etymology of Christ was that it refers to Jesus Christ.
Geography
Créteil is located in the southeastern suburbs of Paris. The Marne river waters it, which carries out its last loop before meeting the Seine at Charenton-le-Pont. Marne and Seine have eroded the area into an alluvial plain. As well as Maisons-Alfort, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, Bonneuil-sur-Marne, Limeil-Brévannes, Valenton, Choisy-le-Roi, and Alfortville, this commune borders several other communes.

This area has mild differences between highs and lows, and there is adequate rainfall all year. The Köppen Climate Classification system categorizes Créteil as having a marine west coast climate, abbreviated “Cfb.”
Geography
Vienna is located in northeastern Austria, at the easternmost extension of the Alps in the Vienna Basin. The earliest settlement, at the location of today’s inner city, was south of the meandering Danube while the city now spans both sides of that river and is made up mainly by a series of long ring-roads. Elevations in Vienna range from a high of 542 meters to a low of just 151 meters. The city spans 415 square kilometers, making it Austria’s largest city.
History
There are still some rare flints in the area from the Paleolithic period. However, the prehistoric pride of Créteil is a two-ton polishing machine from the Neolithic era. The first documents referring to Créteil date back to the Merovingian era, when the town was called Vicus Cristoilum. In Gallic, clearing is thought to be the same as Crist, and a ridge is believed to be the same as oilum. A road connecting Paris and Sens (Trunk Road 19) has been cleared of the “ridge” of Mont-Mesly. As a result of successive deformations from Cristoill (1278), Cristeuil, Cresteul, and Creteuil, the place name “Créteil” appeared in 1406.
Huguenots plundered the church and burned local charters during the French Wars of Religion (1567). As a result of new disturbances in 1648, the residents of Créteil were forced to evacuate. Louis XIV’s reign ended after a terrible winter in 1709 led to 69 deaths in Créteil due to a severe food shortage throughout the country. There are 15 references to Créteil in the grievance registers of the French Revolution in 1789.
The first middle-class “Parisian” houses were constructed at the beginning of the 18th century. Russian troops conquered the east of Créteil in 1814. It replaced an ancient ferry that crossed the Marne between Creteil and Saint-Maur-des-Fossés on 9 April 1841.
Créteil suffered significantly during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. As a result of the Prussians plundering and destroying the borough, and the nearby battle of Mont-Mesly on 30 November 1870, 179 people died. As a result of World War II, Créteil lost its rustic character, and its population increased from 13,800 in 1954 to 30,654 in 1962.
A utopian artistic and literary community named L’Abbaye de Créteil was founded in 1906 near the Créteil Abbey, where some members lived and held meetings. On and around Ile Sainte-Catherine, some of Créteil’s forested parkland remains remnants of a pastoral landscape that dominated Créteil at the time. Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, author of the Futurist Manifesto, and Constantin Brâncuşi were among the artists, writers, and philosophers associated with the group, which disbanded in 1908.
Upon creation of the new department of Val-de-Marne in 1965, the city was made a Préfecture.

The city’s general medical staff consists of 27 pharmacies, about 60 dentists, approximately 60 general practitioners, ten pediatricians, and a half-dozen ophthalmologists and dermatologists.
Transport
There are four stations on Paris Métro Line 8 serving Creteil: Créteil – L’Échat, Créteil – Université, Créteil – Préfecture, and the newly opened Pointe du Lac (opened in 2011).
Sport
The city’s football club is US Créteil-Lusitanos, founded in 1936. Stade Dominique Duvauchelle is their home stadium, and they play in National Championship (3rd division).
