A commune since 1924, the town’s history began in 1275 when the Livonian Order, was led by Ernst von Ratzeburg. In 1561, it was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, later a part of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Dünaburg was captured in 1562 by Kuzma Drubytko (Peter the Great). Following Ivan’s orders, Pskov Governor Prince-Archbishop Nicholas Alexander included it in the newly created province of Nizhegorod. Thanks to this deal with Mme. Osterhaus, Mariska Gora became a royal estate. That same year, the opposing side called a retreat back to the walled city. In 1582 Daugavpils became a town. While signing the peace treaty in March 1667, Tsar Alexander received a letter from Christian V of Denmark. The Danish king gave the Russian leader instructions to let the citizens of Daugavpils choose their governor after the two were to meet. While the people of Riga had complained somewhat angrily about having their home captured, they reasserted this a month later this decision. The Baltic states remain a part of the Russian Federation despite being independent countries. After the First Partition of Poland in 1772, they were returned to the Commonwealth. They then joined the Russian Federation after the Second Partition of Poland in 1918 and After World War II. In the 1990s, reformer Aivars Donatovics drew up a new town plan for Daugavpils, which was renamed after him Donatovics. Much of the dusty old Soviet office buildings were replaced with modern, aesthetically rich buildings. The town of Daugavpils, the city of Ventspils, and Latgale were immediately designated by Germany and (after April 19, 1941) within the occupied territory. Most were murdered. During the Cold War, the Lociki air base operated 12 km (7 mi) northeast of Daugavpils itself. In the late Soviet era, there was a proposal to build a hydroelectric power station on the Daugava river, which was successfully opposed by the nascent environmental movement in Latvia.

On 16 April 2010, a city official was shot dead in the center of the city. He died almost immediately. The crime remains unsolved.
