Debrecen Overview

Debrecen is the capital of Hungary’s Northern Great Plain region. It has two towers and an entire, 19th-century Reformed Church that sits in the middle of its main square, Kossuth Tér. Inside the museum, you can learn more about its history and how to restore it to its original state. The Déri Museum contains a wide array of interesting items on display. From archaeological finds to centuries-old weapons, and fine art to local crafts, you are sure to find something that’s right up your alley when you get there. There’s even a chamber with wonders like mathematical formulae and ancient hieroglyphics.

Etymology

In 1235, the city of Debrezun was first mentioned. It is unknown what the name may have meant back then and many theories exist about that. Slavic origin is one of them and a possible translation would be “Well-esteemed”.

History

The name referred to the Debrecen “castle” which was built in the 13th century and provided protection against incursions that attacked Hungary from Central Asia. After it passed through a few owners, it came under completely owned by Matthias Corvinus.

The citizens of Debrecen were given the right to appoint a judge and council in 1361 by Louis I of Hungary. The city became an important trading hub by the early 16th century.

King Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor, gave Debrecen to Serbian ruler Stefan Lazarević under the terms of a treaty in September 1411 to help him maintain his seat of power in the armed conflicts with Hungary. Lazarevic’s successor, Duaritch Branković (1426-1459), continued his legacy. Between 1450 and 1507, it was a domain of the Hunyadi (family name).

During the Ottoman period, Debrecen, due to its proximity to a border and not having any castle or city walls, often found itself in difficult situations. However, this was only due to natural disasters and the town was saved by their diplomatic skills. There have been many different rulers in Debrecen at different points throughout its long history. The Ottoman Empire, Catholic European rulers, and even Francis II Rákóczi himself came into power at different times. However, the town embraced the Protestant Reformation quite early and received the nickname “the Calvinist Rome.” At this period Debrecen was controlled by the Turkish Ottoman Empire as a sanjak and came under the control of Budin, Eğri, and Varat between 1558–1693.

King Leopold I of the House of Habsburg in 1693 granted Debrecen a royal city status that lasted over 300 years. The Roman Catholic Church returned to Debrecen in 1715 and was able to build St. Ann’s Cathedral where they also found sanctuary from conflicts. By this time, the town was an important cultural, commercial, and agricultural center. It was home to Duke Nicholas’ Protestant College which later became Debrecen University and is the predecessor of today’s Reformed Theological University in Debrecen.

Culture

Debrecen has been the intellectual and cultural center of its surrounding area since the 16th century. The reformation and its prestigious Calvinist College have helped this city highlight even more in this time. Over the centuries, colleges grew into universities and their academic life expanded outside of the city of Eger (Hu: Nagyvárad, now in Romania). From 1949-1950, several departments of the university were shut down, due to the Communist takeover. With many students and teachers being expelled, the university is still widely recognized for its use of architecture and design. If you need something at the biggest university in Hungary, it can save a lot of time and effort. They are known for the cactus research lab in their botanical gardens behind the main building and so it is another important aspect of your business to keep in mind.

Although Debrecen Airport is the second largest in Hungary, it has been recently modernized to help handle international flights. However, most flights still use Budapest’s Ferihegy Airport. From the Debrecen Airport, you can easily reach other cities that include Brussels, Eindhoven, London, Malmö, Milan, and Tel Aviv. In addition to those cities, Paris is also within easy travel distance. As part of Hungary’s National Development Plan for 2004 to 2006, a new railway line between the capital and Debrecen was financed in 2000. This was made possible with a €2.7 billion loan from the EU.

The club recently opened its new stadium in 2014, which led to its winning a seventh league championship in the 2014-15 season. The team also often visits for international games at the current stadium.

A lot of association football clubs came out of Budapest in the 1930s. One of them was Bocskai FC who had won the Hungarian Cup that year, too. The other club from the city was Dózsa Mádival which competed in the 1945-46 Nemzeti Bajnokság I.

  4. Flower Carnival

    – The flower carnival has been running in the city since 1966, and now it’s one of Hungary’s most well-known (non-music) festivals. For one week in August, every year, the city becomes awash with color and decorations as flowers are displayed.

    – One of the best collections in Hungary, this museum is housed in an impressive neo-baroque building.
  6. Ferenc Medgyessy Memorial Museum
