Delft Overview

In the western Netherlands, Delft, a canal-ringed city, manufactures Delftware, hand-painted blue-and-white pottery. In its old town, the medieval Oude Kerk is the burial site of Johannes Vermeer, a native son and Dutch Master painter. The 15th-century Nieuwe Kerk overlooked Delft’s lively market square and used to be the royal House of Orange seat.

History

Delft is located beside a canal, the ‘Delf,’ whose name derives from the Dutch word delves, meaning to dig or delve. Around 1075, a Count established his manor at the elevated point where this ‘Delf’ crossed the creek wall of the silted-up river Gantel. Consequently, Delft became an important market town, as evidenced by the size of its central market square.

After being a village in the early Middle Ages, Delft developed into a city, and Count Willem II granted Delft its city charter on 15 April 1246. There was a boom in trade and industry. A canal was dug through Delfshavensche Schie in 1389 that connected the port of Delft to the Maas river.

Delft was one of the major cities in Holland’s former county (and later province) until the 17th century. The city had 6,500 inhabitants in 1400, making it the third-largest city in the Netherlands after Dordrecht (8,000) and Haarlem (7,000). Approximately 28,000 residents populated Amsterdam in 1560, followed by Delft, Leiden, and Haarlem, which had 14,000 residents.

The town’s association with the House of Orange began when William of Orange (Willem van Oranje), nicknamed William the Silent (Willem de Zwijger), moved into the former Saint-Agatha convent (now called Prinsenhof). He led growing Dutch national resistance to Spanish occupation during the Eighty Years’ War. Delft was then one of Holland’s leading cities, equipped with the necessary city walls to serve as capital. During the Battle of Delft in October 1573, Spanish forces were repelled.

Late June to early September is an excellent time to visit Delft to enjoy warm-weather activities.

Culture

Delft pottery is known for its ceramic products modeled after Chinese porcelain imported in the 17th century. Since it was the home port of the Dutch East India Company, the city had an early start in this area. It can still be seen at the pottery factories De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles (or Royal Delft) and De Delftse Pauw, while new ceramics can be found at the Terra Delft Gallery.
