Deventer Overview
The city and municipality of Deventer are located in the province of Overijssel in the historical region of Salland. Approximately 100,913 people lived in Deventer in 2020. A small part of the city is located on the west bank of the river IJssel, but most are on the east bank.
History
The English missionary Lebuinus founded Deventer around 768 AD with a wooden church on the east bank of the river IJssel. A Saxon expedition burned and sacked this church in January 772 AD, leading Charlemagne to wage his first punitive war against the Saxons. Against the Saxons, Charlemagne destroyed the Irminsul (the sacred tree of the Saxons) in retribution. At Colmschate, 4 km east of the current city, remains of a late Roman Iron Age settlement (dated to c.300 AD) were excavated between 1981 and 2006.
In 882, Vikings looted and burned down the village of Deventer, which was already critical because of a trading route crossing IJssel. An earthen wall was erected and fortified (remains of this wall have been found and restored in the street Stenen Wal).
In 956, Deventer received city rights, which led to constructing fortifications or replacing fortifications with stone walls as a means of defense. Due to its harbor on the river IJssel, which could accommodate large ships, Deventer became a flourishing trade city between 1000 and 1500. Hanseatic League membership eventually followed for the city.
The city traded dried haddock and cod from Norway, hence its nickname: “Deventer Stokvis.” In the 15th century, Deventer had a standard mint, which made coins for the three IJssel cities of Deventer, Zwolle, and Kampen.
Geert Groote was born in Deventer, home of his Brethren of the Common Life, a school of religious thought that influenced Thomas a Kempis and Erasmus later in life. Founded in 1477, it was among the first cities to have printing presses, along with Haarlem. It also housed a Latin School that became internationally renowned around 1300 and remained in service until 1971. Desiderius Erasmus, a 1466-born scholar who attended the school between 1475 and 1484, was its most well-known student.

Deventer has a northern hemisphere climate, and the summer season here begins at the end of June and ends in September. The environment of Deventer is similar to that of almost all of the Netherlands, being oceanic (Köppen climate classification Cfb).
Sports
Sports-related activities occur in stadium De Adelaarshorst, home of the Deventer Go Ahead Eagles. It is one of the oldest stadiums today and is located in a 1930s neighborhood.
Among the fastest skating tracks in the Netherlands is De Scheg, founded in 1992 and has been semi-indoor since 2011.
Due to its location on the banks of the IJssel, Deventer is also home to several watersports clubs.
Education
Also located in Deventer, it is one of three Saxion University of Applied Sciences (Saxion Hogeschool) campuses. This polytechnic school offers internationally recognized Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in various fields, including engineering, economics, social work, investigations, and health care. Besides Enschede and Apeldoorn, there are two other campuses.
Transport
- Rail – Deventer has two train stations, the Colmschate, and the Railway Station.
- Public transport – The Achterhoek tram network connected Deventer to the rest of the country. Geldersch-Overijsselsche Stoomtram Maatschappij (GOSM) and its successors operated the tram line between Deventer and Borculo between 1885 and 1944.
