Doetinchem Overview
The city and municipality of Doetinchem are located in the eastern Netherlands. A part of Gelderland, the Achterhoek, is along the Oude IJssel river. Fifty-seven thousand five hundred fifty-five people were living in the municipality in 2019, and an area of 79.66 km2, of which 0.61 km2 is water.
History
Skulls, pottery shards, and flint arrowheads found in the area indicate the area was inhabited more than 11,000 years ago. Celtic and Germanic tribes like the Franks and Saxons followed these prehistoric hunters. There is archaeological evidence that Vikings plundered the area as well as Roman coins.
It was in 838 that the name Doetinchem first appeared in a document mentioning a ‘villa Duetinghem,’ a small settlement with a church. The then Bishop of Utrecht had received a fortress and a church called ‘Deutinkem’ in 887. Many spellings, such as ‘Duttichem,’ ‘Duichingen,’ and ‘Deutekom,’ have been used over the centuries.
A town wall was built around 1100 after Doetinchem suffered several attempts by plunderers. It was a small place for a long time, but around 1100. It started to grow. Count Otto II of Gelre and Zutphen granted Doetinchem its city rights (stadsrechten) in 1236 in exchange for taxes and soldiers for his army. In addition, the new city council published rules codified in the ‘Keurboek van Doetinchem’ (Doetinchem’s Rules Book), which laid down severe punishments for violations.
As plunderers increased, Doetinchem’s walls were raised by a meter in 1226. The Hamburgerpoort (built 1302), the Waterpoort, the Gruitpoort, and the Hezenpoort were four large gates that replaced the four weak points in the wall. On the remains of this rampart, the ‘walmolen’ stands (dutch ‘wal’=rampart, ‘molen’=mill), the city’s central windmill.

Transport
The Zevenaar-Doetinchem section of Highway 15 (A15) connected Doetinchem to the Dutch national highway system in November 1974.
Two stations serve Doetinchem, one in the city center – Doetinchem and Doetinchem De Huet to the west, between De Huet and Dichteren. Doetinchem is administered by the regional train from Arnhem to Winterswijk.
