Dordrecht Overview

Dordrecht is one of the most famous cities in the Netherlands, and it’s a city that’s culturally, historically, and demographically diverse. When exploring this city, check out Rembrandtplein and the Dordrecht Hageveld cemetery.

Etymology

Dordrecht is a city near the coast of South Holland province. Its name comes from “thoroughfare” (from Thuredriht) or “ship-canal” and seems to mean “giving passage.” In 1996, other etymologists had already rejected the derivation of ‘direct’ to Latin’ trajectory, which translates to “crossing,” as suggested by earlier theories. The Drecht is likely derived from the word ‘drag,’ a form of Scandinavian past tense that means to pull, tow, or drag. The residents of Dordrecht are called Dordtenaren (singular: Dordtenaar).

Dordrecht is informally referred to as Dort in the English language. It was both a trading port and a major one in earlier centuries.

Early history

Amsterdam was built on the Thure river, a massive Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta branch. The delta creates water that flows into the Amstel river and eventually into the North Sea. The city of Dordrecht contains one reference to the county of Holland; Count Dirk IV was murdered in 1049.

William I, also known as William the Silent, granted city rights to Dordrecht, one of the oldest cities in South Holland. Geertruidenberg was the first city in the historical county of Holland to receive city rights, but this municipality is now part of the province of North Brabant.

In the 12th and 13th Centuries, the city of Dordrecht developed into an important trading city thanks to its precise location. It traded primarily on wine, wood, and cereals. In 1299, Dordrecht received a unique staple right that allowed it to sell grain only in case of war or pestilence.

In 1253, the oldest gymnasium in the Netherlands was founded in Dordrecht, known as “The Latin School of Johan de Witt.” It still exists today, operating as the Johan de Witt Gymnasium. Gerhard Johann Vossius served as the rector at this school from 1600 to 1615.

On the night of November 18th and 19th, in 1421, a flood covered south Holland with water, leaving Dordrecht to be an isolated island. Recent research has indicated that the number of people who died because of the flood was probably less than 200, but it was commonly said during its time that over 10,000 people had perished.

On June 29th, 1457, a fire broke out in Kleine Spuistraat and destroyed many buildings. One of which was the Grote Kerk.

Demography

Around 1,9% of the residents in Dordrecht are from abroad, and these immigrants arrived in the city in their youth and now make up a large part of new residents. Dordrecht has approximately 6,000 residents that are of Turkish citizenship, and many of these people have their roots in Kayapınar.

In 2005 and 2008, Dordrecht’s population consisted of the following ethnic groups: Dutch (59.1%), Moroccans (18.2%), Turks (4.9%), Surinamese (2%), Antilleans/Dutch Dominicans 2%) and others 2%.

Population

118,899 (2015)

Economy

The economy of Dordrecht is known for its steel, shipbuilding, and wood industries. Many people are employed at one of the largest employers on Dordrecht Island, DuPont de Nemours. There are nine factories and 900 employees.

The “Learning” Business Park is intended to have 60,000 sqft (645.834 square feet) of space for educational institutions. There are also plans to construct a “Health” Business Park, which will be completed at a future date. The Dordwijk Campus and the Health Park will be located in the city of Dordrecht, with the Albert Schweitzer Hospital as its focal point. Other medical services include a blood bank, pharmacy, and mental health clinics.

Shopping

Shoppers must find the center of Dordrecht to shop. You will spot the Voorstraat, the cycle path, and the Sarisgang. The shopping district is also known as Statenplein, which falls within your reach on foot. The Netherlands’ longest shopping street is the Voorstraat, 1,200 yards long. Markets are regularly held on the Statenplein and in the Sarisgang, with Wednesday market day also being held in Dubbeldam.

Public transport

Dordrecht is quite well connected to the Dutch railway system and situated near several international connections. There are three railway stations; Dordrecht Railway Station, Zuid Railway Station, and Stadspolders Railway Station.

What is Dordrecht known for?

Visit the oldest city in Holland, and enjoy many monuments and museums, old warehouses, and streets full of bustling people. They preserve the history of this city through the water. Het Hof, the Great Church, and Huis Gijn are three famous buildings you can visit while in Bruges.

Is Dordrecht a nice place to live?

Dordrecht is a small city outside Rotterdam but still has plenty of advantages. For example, many rent cheaply there but still have a subway system and other amenities from living in a bigger town.
