Douai Overview
A city in northern France, Douai is located in the Nord département, and the sub-prefecture belongs to the department. One of the most impressive belfries in the region is located in Douai, located 40 km from Lille and 25 km from Arras.
History
The site likely corresponds to that of Duacum, a Roman fortress dating from the 4th century. The town was a romance fiefdom of the counts of Flanders from the 10th century onward. The town was historically known as Douay or Doway in English and flourished as a textile market center during the Middle Ages. The county of Flanders passed into the domains of the Dukes of Burgundy in 1384 and then into the possession of the Habsburgs in 1477.
In 1667, Douai was taken by the troops of Louis XIV of France, and by the 1668 Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, the town was ceded to France. During successive sieges from 1710 to 1712, Douai was almost destroyed by the British Army. By 1713, the city was fully integrated into France. Douai became the seat of the Parliament of Flanders (fr).
World War I again involved Douai in hostilities, and the town was partly burned in 1918 before being liberated by the British Army after the Battle of Courtrai. Douai was also severely damaged during World War II. Until the 1960s, the town was known for its richest coalfield in northern France, which is still a regional transportation and commercial hub.
There is great significance in the history of French aviation associated with the local airfield at La Brayelle. During the 1907-1950 period, it was in operation. It served as a base for the Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen, during World War I, after the world’s first aeronautical meeting in 1909.

Douai experiences an oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification Cfb). A year-round average temperature of 11.0°C (51.8°F) is recorded in Douai. Annual rainfall averages 729.2 millimeters (28.71 inches), with December being the wettest month. In July, temperatures average around 18.6 °C (65.5 °F), while in January, they average approximately 4.0 °C (39.2 °F).
Economy
Chemicals and metal engineering are the primary industries in the town. The town is home to a large Renault vehicle assembly plant. A former Renault CEO named Georges Besse opened the Usine Georges Besse in 1970 to produce numerous well-known Renault vehicles, including the R14, R11, R19, Megane, and Scénic. As a result, it has become one of Renault’s centers of excellence for electric vehicles.

Regional trains run from Gare de Douai to Lille, Arras, Lens, Amiens, Saint-Quentin, and Valenciennes. There are also high-speed trains to Paris, Lyon, Nantes, and other cities on the TGV network.
