Musée Portuaire

The 19th-century tobacco warehouse in Dunkirk is one of the few historic buildings that survived the war. It has been transformed into an evocative museum that tells the port’s fascinating story.

Beffroi de Dunkerque

The belfries of Flanders, including Dunkirk’s, are listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. It was initially the campanile of Saint-Eloi church next door, replacing an old watchtower in the 15th century.

Plage de Malo-les-Bains

Just east of the port lies Dunkirk’s enormous sandy beach, one of the best in northern France. Previously, Malo-les-Bains was a separate town but became part of Dunkirk in the 1960s.

Dunkirk 1940 Museum

Bastion 32 was built in 1874 to strengthen France’s border after the Franco-Prussian war. These galleries tell the story of how the operation was planned and executed and some events during a dramatic chapter in the Second World War.

Parc Zoologique de Fort Mardyck

Not the most significant zoo, but large enough for kids to see various animals without getting bored. This area is home to 40 species, including brown bears, lynxes, seals, flamingos, macaws, beavers, dwarf goats, and griffon vultures.

The collection features more than 1,500 pieces from the 1940s to the 1980s, emphasizing pop art (Andy Warhol is represented) and works by CoBrA artists.

Tour du Leughenaer

On Quai des Américains, an octagonal tower 30 meters high, is one of the oldest monuments in Dunkirk. Over several centuries, it was modified and finally completed in 1450 as a beacon.

Dunkirk Carnival

The bonkers carnival in Dunkirk has a reputation far beyond its borders. During the three days before Ash Wednesday, the party runs from mid-January to the end of March.

La Dune Marchand

The dune grass, marram grass, and buckthorn thrive in an ever-changing environment. There are nightingales in the park in the spring, and migratory birds will build their nests in the long grass, shrubs, and woodlands in the autumn.

Gravelines

Located on the border between France and Flanders in the 17th century, Gravelines were under Spanish control. As a result of being captured and then liberated, it became heavily fortified, and most of its architecture is still evident today.
