The city of Dunkirk is located on the coast of northern France. Allied soldiers were evacuated during WWII from Dunkirk’s beaches through Operation Dynamo, documented at the Dunkirk 1940 Museum. A three-masted sailing ship built in 1901 is displayed at the Musée Portuaire (Port Museum) near the water. In addition to being a contemporary art museum, LAAC is also home to a sculpture garden. In Malo-les-Bains, soft sands are lined with resorts.
Dunkirk means ‘church in the dunes’ in West Flemish. It derives from the words dun(e) ‘dune’ and kerke’ church.’ As a result, a smaller town 25 kilometers up the Flemish coast was renamed Oostduinkerke(n) to avoid confusion.
It was common to speak French Flemish (a variant of Dutch) until the middle of the 20th century.
During the French Crown’s control of this area, the Counts of Flanders, vassals of the French Crown, founded a fishing village late in the tenth century in the initially flooded coastal area of the English Channel south of the Western Scheldt. Baldwin III, around AD 960, constructed the town wall to protect it against Viking raids. Monks from Bergues Abbey drained and cultivated the surrounding wetlands. Baldwin V of Flanders issued a tithe privilege in May 1067, mentioning Dunkirka for the first time. In 1157-1191, Count Philip I of Dunkirk cultivated large tracts of marshland, laid out the plans for building the Dunkirk–Bergues Canal, and granted market rights to the Dunkirkers.
When Guy of Flanders entered the Franco-French War in the late 13th century, his suzerain, King Philippe IV of France, was defeated at the Battle of Furnes but gained de facto autonomy after winning the Battle of the Golden Spurs five years later and exacted vengeance on his suzerain. Dunkirk citizens sided with the French against their count. Guy’s son, Count Robert III (1305–1322), nevertheless granted Dunkirk more city rights; his successor, Count Louis I (1322–1346), faced the Peasant revolt of 1323–1328, which King Philippe VI of France crushed at the Battle of Cassel in 1328. Consequently, the French king once again imposed repressive measures upon Dunkirkers.
When the Hundred Years’ War with England broke out in 1337, Count Louis remained a loyal vassal to his French king and prohibited maritime trade, leading to another revolt by Dunkirk citizens. In 1346, following the count’s death in the Battle of Crécy, his son and successor, Count Louis II of Flanders (1346-1384), agreed to a truce with the English; trade again flourished, and the port expanded significantly. From 1378, however, English supporters of Pope Urban VI (the Roman claimant) seized Dunkirk and flooded its estates during the Western Schism. Charles VI of France ejected them from town, but they left great devastation in their wake.
