Echternach Overview

Echternach is the oldest town in Luxembourg. It’s also a commune with town status, lying near the border with Germany. It’s part of the district of Grevenmacher in eastern Luxembourg. This town has lovely architecture and medieval buildings, some from as old as 796AD!

History

The town of Echternach has a long history and was originally founded by the monks who lived at the Abbey of Echternach. The abbey was founded in 698 and is the oldest in Luxembourg. It rests on what is now known as the “Graveyard of Princes.” As the Abbot at Echternach monastery, he was the last bishop of Echternach until he died in 739. Every year, people gather on Whit Tuesday to celebrate him with a dancing procession.

The river Sauer that flows through the town now forms the border between Luxembourg and Germany; in the earlier Roman Empire and under the Merovingians by contrast, that same river did not form a border or march in this area. Echternach’s Roman villa was the largest north of the Alps, with traces that were rediscovered in 1975. Echternach was at one point part of the Electorate of Trier, a region that today belongs to Germany. The territory was appropriated by Willibrord from Irmina (Irmine), daughter of Dagobert II, king of the Franks after being granted permission by Rome.

The town of Echternach remained under the patronage of Charlemagne’s family for centuries. Even though the monks were displaced by the canons of Trier’s bishop between 859 and 971, Willibrord’s buildings burned down in 1017 and his remains are in a crypt. As the abbey grew, the town nearby thrived and became a city in 1236. The library and room of writing were famous across Europe and since then, have been rebuilt in a handsome baroque style in 1737. The church was attacked in 1794 and used as a porcelain factory after. The monks have driven away after the French Revolution in 1797 and the abbey was sold off. Many of our older manuscript pieces are now scattered in different libraries, such as the Echternach Gospels which are now located at cultural heritage initiatives. In the 19th century, a porcelain factory was established in the abbey which caused an influx of new people and a decline in the population. The town’s revival was only brought about when the railroad came through and this led to an increase in income and the arrival of more visitors.

World War II ended in Europe on December 16, 1944, when the German forces attempted to retake Antwerp. This was only possible with a back-door maneuver in Luxembourg and Belgium that started on the day before; one of its last military operations was the Battle of Echternach. The town was damaged quite a lot during the Second World War, however, it’s been faithfully reconstructed.

Culture

There are two churches in Echternach and the larger one is St. Willibrord Abbey’s Basilica, which was built in the original system; it is a fine monument of Roman Gothic architecture. The basilica is now situated in the heart of the town’s historical center, which also contains a nineteenth-century presbytery (now home to a university). Both the parish church of St Peter and Paul, with the remains of St Willibrord located under its altar, as well as the nearby Prehistory Museum, which gives a timeline of mankind’s history over one million years.

Echternach is located just to the east of Echternach Lake, which hosts various events every year, like the “e-Lake music festival” or the “Mill Man Trail” bike race. Since 1975, the small city of Echternach has been the site of an international music festival that attracts musicians and visitors from all over the world. In 2018, organizers decided to stop holding this event altogether.

Is Echternach worth visiting?

Echternach is a charming town that is often overlooked by tourists. Although it’s smaller and off the beaten path, it features some fascinating attractions and quirky shops to explore. In just a few hours you’re sure to see something new!

7 Best Things To Do In Echternach, Luxembourg

  1. Abbey of Echternach

    – Saint Willibrord is buried within the grounds of this abbey. He was the first abbot at the Echternach church. The first Saint-Willaire center in Echternach was founded with financial backing from Pepin of Herstal, a Frankish statesman, and military leader. St. Willibrord died in 739 – and was laid to rest in the town – after establishing it with the cooperation of Pepin. Pepin then raised the Abbey of Echternach into a Royal Abbey, and it soon became one of the most prosperous towns in Luxembourg.
  2. Echternach Lake

    – A perfect spot for kids and adults alike to relax after a busy day of exploring the town. Kids will love paddling their way around this artificial lake located just outside of Echternach. Although swimming is not allowed in the lake, it is possible to go out boating or fishing without a permit.
  3. Fortified Walls of Echternach

    – Although badly damaged in the war, it later underwent a restoration developing its original condition. The medieval walls show signs of wear due to age, but are still strong and held steady. The walls of the town date back to the 10th century and were expanded in the 12th century to include more towers and gates, further fortifying it. The Tower of London is a must-see for tourists visiting London. You can either take a quick walk over to the towers or gates for a picture, if you’ve got time for it, your family and friends will have to try and count up to 20 towers and 4 gates.
  4. The Abbey Garden (The Orangerie)

    – One great spot near The Abbey of Echternach is the nearby garden. Located next to the ‘Sure River,’ it’s a fantastic place just to spend some time relaxing and admiring all that nature has to offer. On your left, look for the Abbey courtyard and take a walk through an arch. Here you’ll find the Orangerie with statues representing the four seasons on its front side.
  5. The Roman Villa

    – Visiting a historic town without visiting nearby archaeological sites is no visit at all. The Roman Villa, located on the periphery of Echternach, is one of the best-preserved roman villas in Luxembourg and it dates back to the 1st to 5th century AD. These ruins are the remnants of a settlement where everyday life was reconstructed with full-sized models. Entry to the site is via a small museum that has been created adjacent to an artificial lake excavated in 1975. If you’re interested, have a quick look at the small-scale replica of what the Roman Villa might’ve looked like before stepping out to see its old foundations. Entry is free, and you can visit for as long as the site is open.
  6. The Market Square (Mullerthal Trail Musee de L’abbaye Denzelt)

    – The Market Square’s main feature is the palace of justice, built in the 14th century and which has served as a courthouse for over 600 years. However, a fire in 1444 destroyed much of the building, which was later rebuilt in the following years. Veer past Market Square for a quick bite and spot the Gothic features of the Denzelt nearby. Just a stone’s throw away from the ancient Denzelt is the Rue de la Montague which includes stone slabs commemorating Echternach’s 1300-year-old history.
  7. The Cross of Justice

    – This monument in Market Square is called the Column of Judgement (Urtsel). It signifies the power and authority of the Abbot. In 1774, some people wanted to dismantle this symbol because they felt that a fountain would be more appropriate. However, the castle would not be destroyed until 1794 when it was demolished by the troops of the French Revolution. 144 years later, the column was once again set up in front of the town hall only to be destroyed again in 1944. This time, it had been restored 6 years ago. Today, here it stands once more after it was rebuilt in 1982. It is a wonderful sight to behold this column together with the Denzelt.
