Enschede Overview

Enschede is a municipality and city in the Netherlands. It’s situated in the province of Overijssel, part of the Twente region. The eastern parts of its population reach just before the border with Germany, where-in there is also a city called Gronau.”

At one point, the city of Enschede was an independent municipality, and not only was it surrounded by a rural municipality and three other surrounding municipalities. In 1935, however, these surrounding rural municipalities were permanently annexed into the city of Enschede when its rapid industrial expansion began. The proposal for consolidation started in 1872 and was referenced in an article in the Tubantia newspaper dated 22 June 1872. The five committee members were J Mosman, H Fikkert, H G Blijdenstein, J Bz., and C C Schley.

Enschede is best known in sports and culture for being home to F.C. Twente, one-time Dutch champions. The town also has a University of Twente that’s well known around the Netherlands and Europe.

Geography

Enschede is the easternmost city in Overijssel and has 140,000 residents, and it is just a few kilometers from Germany and borders the municipality. You’ll find small rivers flowing through or around Enschede.

Climate

Enschede, like the rest of the Netherlands, features a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters. Although the former military airport is derelict and plans to revive the place were canceled in 2012, The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute maintains a weather station.

History

Enschede’s history is unknown primarily but overlooks the Old Marketplace in Medieval times. The story starts with King Henry VII and his son, King Henry VIII, and they both became King in 1509, and within their reigns, a church was built in 1514.

Enschede has been a city since 1305 and was granted protection in 1325 by Jan III van Diest, the bishop who ensured its stability. Because importing stone was too expensive, Ensenede decided to build a system of ditches, palisades, and hedges instead. This is still evident by the street names “the North Hedge” and “the South Hedge.” It looks like the city plan has changed over time. In 1597, the Spanish garrison took the city using a siege. There were significant changes after that, but it still looks pretty familiar.

Enschede earned a notorious nickname that persists to this day. A series of blazes in the 1800s took quite a toll on the city and left it with its nickname that translates to “arsonists.”

Religion

Christians make up the largest religion in Enschede, with about 34.9% of the population, which is in line with the global average.

There are now three Syriac Orthodox churches in Enschede. One large one, and also smaller ones. This is because Assyrians first arrived in the 1970s from Turkey, where you have the city of Tur Abdin. They came for religious reasons and helped find a job when times were tough.

During the festivities of Carnival, which happens any time between February and March, Enschede is renamed Krekkelstad, which means “cricket town” in English.

Economy

Today, the city where textile production once thrived is one of the poorest municipalities in the Netherlands. Employers left Enschede after they found cheaper production centers in South-East Asia. Enschede is becoming more attractive to educated and wealthy citizens migrating to the city as renovation work takes place to bump up its appeal.

Enschede and the Old Market Square are known for their various events and festivals, and many of them take place here. The city is also home to many big stores that wouldn’t be found in other smaller towns.

Being in proximity to Germany has historically benefited the city’s economy. They smuggled coffee, tobacco, and other goods into Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries without tariffs. Many Germans visit their shops during their trips as well. The native language of Enschede is currently Dutch, which many people can speak fluently.

The city of Enschede has agreed to a proposal to be merged with Hengelo and Almelo under the name Netwerkstad Twente. This draft law was defeated in parliament due to opposition from the other towns, including Borne and Almelo.

One of the most important employers in the region is Grolsch beer and Apollo Vredestein. All located in Enschede, this company has been around for hundreds of years and has helped many companies grow.

Transport

  • Air – Previously, Enschede had a combined regional civil airport, “Enschede Airport,” and Airbase Twenthe of the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
  • Roads – Around the center districts of Enschede is a complete ring road with a length of approximately 8 km, which is popularly called “de singel.”

Sports

F.C. Twente was the 2010 Eredivisie champion, but they were relegated following last year’s failed bid to return to the top tier. Enschede, a city in the Netherlands, has the second-oldest marathon, and Enschede’s date is pretty old, even for the oldest marathon in The Netherlands!
