Though this area is populated, it has been inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological findings indicate that prehistoric men lived here 50,000 years ago.

Érd itself was first mentioned in documents in 1243 because it is rare that the name comes from one single word. It may come from the word erdő (“forest”) or ér (“stream”).

The Turks captured the city of Érd in 1543 after Székesfehérvár fell. When the Turks arrived in Hungary, they built a small motte castle and a mosque near the modern-day community of Érd. After 1684, it became known as Hamzabég (Hamazabeğ) in Turkish. It was famous for being where Charles V defeated the Turks during his army’s campaign in Hungary.

In 1776, Érd became an Ottoman-owned town. It may or may not have been the Turkish population before the Ottoman occupation. It became a royal property via purchase in the early 20th century and has been so for over 100 years. In 1972, Érd had a significant economic impact on its surrounding area. Its beauty is now recognized as essential to the promotion of tourism in the area and many facilities were built to meet the town’s population boom.

Érd is one of Hungary’s fastest-growing cities, with a population that increased by 30% in the time between 1991 and 2001. After its growth was shown during this time, it was granted city status on November 7, 2005.
