Ettelbruck Overview
This is Ettelbruck, a town in central Luxembourg with a population of 9,246.
History
Until the mid-1800s, both Erpeldange and Schieren were part of the Ettelbruck commune. However, since then they’ve been considered separate towns by official decree. Nazi Germany occupied Ettelbruck on 10 May 1940.
The US liberated Ettelbruch for the first time on September 11th, 1944 but Germany retook the town on December 16th as part of their defense against the Battle of the Bulge. General George S. Patton led US troops in freeing Ettelbruch for a second time on Christmas Day, 1944. Ettelbruck square Patton is one of the main squares in Ettelbruck and marks the spot where German troops invading with tanks into Luxembourg’s Alzette Valley were stopped, ending its attempt to retake the country. General Patton and many other allied troops fought in the town. The town holds a Remembrance Day celebration each year to honor them.

In Ettelbruck, the weather is usually moderate and partly cloudy in the summertime. The winter months, on the other hand, are usually very cold and windy, with partly cloudy skies. The best time of year to visit Ettelbruck for warm-weather activities is from late June to early-mid August.

Ettelbruck is one of the 12 communes in the canton of Diekirch, which is part of the district Diekirch. The local council (French: Conseil communal de Ettelbruck) is governmental. They serve as the community’s local council and are in charge of various administrative matters.
Transportation
Ettelbrak is strategically located at the point where three rivers meet: the Sauer, Wark, and Alzette. The intersecting waterways led to Ettelbrak’s designation as a major transportation hub for the country during times of yore.
The Ettelbruck station is a junction with a branch to Diekirch, Luxembourg-Liege railway line, Line 10 connects the city of Luxembourg to central and northern Luxembourg towards Gouvy and Wiltz.
It is important to note that the Motorway of the North, known as the A7 motorway is connected to Ettelbruck via the trunk road B7 which runs east of Ettelbruck. B7 junction is bordering Schieren. The other main access routes are the national roads Rue de Bastogne and the N7 that crosses Ettelbruck from north to south.
Attractions
The General George S. Patton Memorial Museum in Ettelbruck honors the general who liberated the town. The museum exhibits photographs, uniforms (both military and prison camp), weapons, and documents from the German occupation of Luxembourg. The Forum Museum also displays helmets, plane engines, and a cast of the Patton statue at West Point. It opened on 7 July 1995 and it is situated in the town Centre. It was renovated in 2014 and now features a large graffiti – something that visitors can enjoy!
The Ettelbruck parish church—D’ Kierch Ettelbréck—is a decagonal (octagonal) structure. After restoration in 1849, the church is full of human tombstones from the 15th century.
Sport
Established in 1917, Etzella Ettelbruck is one of the longest-serving football teams in Luxembourg. They play at the 2,000-capacity Stade Am Deich.
Health
Ettelbruck is a medical center in northern Luxembourg and it contains a mental hospital. The Ettelbruck Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (in French, CHNP – pas Centre Hospitalier Neuro-Psychiatrique) was founded in 1855 as Central Hospice but it now has more important patients. “La Vague” by Lucien Wercollier is a marble sculpture located on the grounds of the Cremerie Huit-Ages du Pays de Soultzmatt.
The Centre Hospital du Nord (CHdN) in Ettelbruck was renovated and reopened as a state-of-the-art facility in 2003 on the site of the earlier Charles Marx Clinic and Saint Louis Clinic. Dr. Charles Marx founded the original clinic with these intentions in 1936. Saint Louis Clinic became a point of resistance preceding the Nazi occupation after founder Charles Marx treated downed French airmen in 1940. This includes Marcel-Pierre Faure, who would eventually become a future general. Marx fled to France following the occupation of Luxembourg, and after the Nazis took over he was jailed for treating allied airmen. After Marx died in 1946, the clinic was renamed in honor of him. The New Saint Louis Clinic was founded in 1963 and renamed the New Saint Louis Hospital in 2003. The hospital is located just off the Place de la République, which formed part of a revitalization project to renew one of the capital’s oldest areas.
Education
Ettelbruck is a French-speaking educational center in the north of the country. It’s home to Saint Anne Girls school, which was founded in 1852 and is located between Rue du Canal and Grand-Rue. Lucien Salentiny Avenue is home to the State Agricultural School, which was founded in 1883. Parts of it are still located on Avenue Lucien Salentiny and lead to the Warkens property. There’s been a lot of movement in 2021 and now the main structures have shifted to campus in Gilsdorf, above the Diekirch sports center. One of the buildings there is also an all-boys vocational school that was founded as an agricultural school in 1969.
