Évreux Cathedral

The town’s cathedral, constructed from chalk and with a highly intricate facade, is a must-see. The building has been through a litany of conflicts in its time, which explains the melange of styles: After it was almost destroyed in the 100 Years War, it was rebuilt in a Flamboyant Gothic style, with 16th-century Renaissance additions.

Bishops’ Palace

Constructed by Raoul du Fou in the 1400s, the Bishops’ Palace is attached to the cathedral by a passageway. The structure was built on the Gallo-Roman wall and is a listed “monument historique.”

Musée d’Évreux

This stunning episcopal palace houses the town’s museum, which maps the history and archaeology of Évreux. In addition to the sculpture by Rodin, there’s a severe art exhibition that includes works by Nicolas Maes, Boudin, Jongkind, Soulages, and Fernand Léger from the 17th century to the 20th century.

Beffroi d’Évreux

You don’t see traditional belfries often in this part of France. The Beffroi d’Évreux by the water on Place du Général-de-Gaulle is one of France’s southernmost belfries; the rest are in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

 Remparts

To defend the city against raids, Évreux constructed its ramparts in 275. Nine hectares of land were encircled by these walls, which were more than one kilometer long.

Place du Général-de-Gaulle

Sit by the central fountain on the Place du Général-de-Gaulle and take in the magnificent monuments around you. Designed in the 1890s, the town hall has an “Eclecticist” style.

Église Saint-Taurin

Built in the 5th century to honor St Taurin, the first Bishop of Évreux who was martyred at the hands of the Romans, this medieval church is attached to a Benedictine monastery.

Maison des Arts

Built-in 1880, it originally housed Évreux’s museum, which was relocated in 1959 to the Bishops’ Palace. It has been converted into an art center, hosting studios, classrooms, galleries, and summer workshops for kids, since the 1980s.

Wander along the Iton

For centuries, and this river has been an integral part of life in the town: In Roman times, the walls were aligned with its course, and later, it was harnessed for waterfront industry, supplying dyers and tanners with water, and supplying power to mills.

Gisacum

Two cities in this area were founded almost 2,000 years ago by the Gallic Aulerques Éburovices tribe. Modern Évreux was based on the site of Mediolanum Aulercorum, whereas Gisacum, seven kilometers southeast, served more as a religious sanctuary.
