Frejus Overview

Located on the Côte d’Azur, frejus is a port town in southeastern France. An amphitheater, theater, and aqueduct are among its Roman ruins. The Archaeological Museum displays Roman artifacts. There is a baptistry with Roman columns and painted cloisters in the centuries-old Gothic Saint-Léonce Cathedral. The Notre Dame de Jérusalem Chapel, designed by Jean Cocteau in the 1960s, is in the northeast. A sandy beach can be found south of the center of Fréjus.

History

Frejus was probably founded by Celto-Ligurians who settled near the natural harbor of Aegytna. Mont Auriasque and Cap Capelin still bear the remains of a defensive wall. A Phocaean outpost was later established on the site by the Phocaeans.

The Via Julia Augusta (running between Italy and the Rhône) and the Via Domitia intersected at Frejus, creating a strategic crossroads. Despite a lack of evidence of a settlement at that time, Cornelius Gallus is known to have been born there in 67 B.C.

To replace Massalia, Julius Caesar founded the city of Forum Julii, which means ‘market of Julius’ in Latin. Claustra maris (gateway to the sea) was also Tacitus’ name for the port.

Forum Julii was probably founded in 49 B.C. since it appears in the correspondence between Plancus and Cicero, but the exact date is still being determined.

Mark Antony’s galleys were repatriated to Octavius at Forum Julii following the Battle of Actium in 31 B.C. Octavanorum Colonia was added to it by his veterans of the 8th legion between 29 and 27 B.C.

A new province, Narbonensis, was formed by Augustus in 22 B.C., spurring rapid development in the city. Until at least the time of Nero, its port was the only naval base for the Roman fleet in Gaul and only the second after Ostia in importance.

In addition, under Tiberius, the theater, aqueduct, lighthouse, baths, and theatre were all built: the theater, the aqueduct, and the lighthouse. An area of 35 hectares was protected by impressive walls measuring 3.7 km in length. About six thousand people were living there. From Cabasse in the west to Fayence and Mons in the north, the civitas forojuliensis covered a large area.

Economy

Frejus is a summer resort town that hosts three to four times more people than its regular residents. Several fairs are held in the city throughout the year, including the pottery fair and the Bravade, surrounded by Roman and Gothic architecture with ‘old tile’ rooftops and tinted walls. A beautiful fine sand beach surrounds Port Fréjus, which has 750 moorings. Each year, the ‘Roc d’Azur’ mountain bike race takes place.

Transport

There are rail connections from Fréjus to Saint-Raphal, Les Arcs, Cannes, and other regional destinations. The saint-Raphael-Valescure station offers access to long-distance destinations. Fréjus is connected to Aix-en-Provence and Nice by the A8 autoroute.

Climate

Fréjus is known for its short, warm, dry, and mostly clear summers and long, cold, windy, and partly cloudy winters. In most months of the year, the temperature ranges between 38°F and 84°F, rarely falling below 31°F or rising above 89°F. Fréjus is the best place to enjoy hot-weather activities from late June through late August.

What is Frejus known for?

French Revolutionary statesman Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyès (1748) was born in Fréjus, along with the Roman poet Gaius Cornelius Gallus and Roman general Gnaeus Julius Agricola. In 1959, floods caused by the collapse of the Malpasset Dam devastated the town.

Best Things to Do in Fréjus (France)

Fréjus Cathedral

This cathedral is part of a complex of medieval buildings, some dating back to the earliest days of Christianity in France. The Gothic Bishop’s Palace was fortified in this ensemble, known as the Cité Episcopale.

Cloister

Here are arches and columns dating from the 1200s, with capitals depicting Charles I of Anjou’s Fleur de Lys and a key representing Fréjus’ bishops.

Baptistery

Covered in the 1300s, the baptistery wasn’t rediscovered until 1925, and archaeologists have discovered a 1,600-year-old marble floor, a small terracotta foot pool, and a large octagonal pool where people would have been submerged.

Mont Vinaigre

Located between Fréjus and Cannes, the Esterel Massif consists of dusty, maquis-covered mountains. On the way to Cannes, the DN7 road provides easy access to the tallest of these mountains, Mont Vinaigre, which is over 600 meters high.

Musée Archéologique

Excavations have revealed fascinating insights into the city’s makeup and customs, such as funeral rites and domestic life, of the people who lived here.

Fréjus Aquaduct

40-kilometre line of underground conduits and tall bridges channeled water from the Foux and Siagnole Rivers into ancient Forum Julii via the aqueduct.

Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Jérusalem

This 20th-century French masterpiece is just off the DN7 in the hills behind Fréjus. Located in the middle of a pine and cork forest, this chapel was designed by the artist, poet, and filmmaker Jean Cocteau.

Musée des Troupes de Marine

Founded by Cardinal Richelieu in 1622, Troupes de Marine is the French Navy’s waterborne arm. It explores the history of the Troupes de Marine, which is entwined with French colonialism, so it’s an excellent resource for those interested in that era.

Amphitheatre

The city’s theater had been a picturesque ruin until recently, with large portions of the terraces and arena decaying but still visible and enjoyable to wander through.

Malpasset Dam

Just outside Fréjus are the remains of the Malpasset Dam. The Dam was built in 1952 and broke in 1959, killing 423 people. Since the disaster, the dam site has remained untouched and serves as a memorial.
