Gap Overview

In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in Southeastern France, Gap is part of the Hautes-Alpes department. Forty thousand six hundred thirty-one people lived in the commune in 2019, making it the most populated city in Hautes-Alpes.

Toponymy

Vappincum, later reduced to Vappum, the form of Gap, appears in 13th-century texts as the first attestation of the name.

Based on the radical Vapp-unknown meaning and the suffix -incu of Ligurian origin found in Provence and the Massif central to the Alps (cf. In the 10th century, Arlanc, Nonenque, Moirans, Morencum, and Lemenc, formerly Lemencum, were found. Vappum was the short form of Gap, as attested by the final drop.

History

Gap has been populated since the Neolithic period, and these first inhabitants belonged to the southern Chasséen culture.

The ruins of an oppidum found at the summit of the hill of Saint-Mens and a dolmen discovered in 1866 and the ancient cemetery in Pré Camargue are very rare testimonies of the pre-Roman era. However, these last two discoveries have not been preserved. Money from the Gallic eras was also discovered, and it was the capital of the Celto-Ligurian tribe of the Tricorii. The Celtic language was spoken by these people, probably belonging to the Caturiges tribe.

In 125-124 BC, when the Romans conquered Gallia Narbonensis, the Gapençais were under the control of the Tricorii, and their capitals were Luc-en-Diois and Vaison.

In around 20 BC, Cottius, the leader of a tribe of the Valley of Suze, allied with Rome, undertook the building of a communication route in the Valley of the Durance at the urging of Augustus. As a result, he was able to secure the submission of the area’s people who wished to maintain their independence. Six stations were located along this route, built between 14 and 6 B.C. and called Via Cottia per Alpem. Gap was founded from one of these stations, which was then called Vapincum. Gap became the starting point of a Roman road to Valence in 22 A.D.

Location

The gap is between the historic Dauphiné and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur administrative region at the intersection of D994 and Route Nationale 85, or Route Napoléon.

Geology

The commune of Gap is almost entirely located within the Sillon de Gap, a broad valley bottom rising approximately 735 meters (2,411 ft) above sea level up to nearly 2,000 meters (6,600 ft) on the Western slopes (Charance mountain and Gleize).

At 2,385 meters (7,825 ft), the Raz de Bec, the highest point in the municipality, lies outside this great valley, within the boundaries of Chaudun, which merged with Gap in the nineteenth century.

Climate

According to the Köppen climate classification, Gap has an oceanic climate (Cfb) with continental influences (Dfb). Due to its interior location, the city experiences cold, snowy winters and warm summers, resulting in a more or less alpine climate.

Transport

  • Road network – The gap is at the crossroads of several roads. North and south are served by route nationale R.N. 85. East is served by R.N. 94 [fr], and west is served by departmental road RD 994.
  • Rail – SNCF provides service to the city. A night train connects Gap station directly to Paris, regional trains to Briançon, Grenoble, Valence (Gare de Valence-Ville and Gare de Valence TGV), and Gap and Marseille.
  • Air transport – Gap-Tallard Airport is located 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) from Gap.
  • Urban transport – The Linea network provides public transportation in the city. There were 12 lines in the network in 2016.
  • Cycling facilities – The city has several cycle paths. Cycle lanes are sometimes separated from road networks, and sometimes they run alongside them.

Demographics

40,776 (2015).

Education

The city administers twelve nursery schools, thirteen elementary schools, and six rural schools. Several private kindergartens and elementary schools are also available.

Health

The Centre Hospitalier Intercommunal of Alpes du Sud (CHICAS) is a hospital in the city. The gap is the most important site as the largest hospital in the Southern Alps, and a geriatrics site is also available at Gap. The CHICAS manages the Sisteron site following a merger. Among the various rehabilitation centers in the city, only the Polyclinic of the Southern Alps is present.

Cultural events and festivities

Nocturnes are organized by the merchants’ association Les Vitrines de Gap during the summer months. There will be musical and festive events accompanied by the opening of downtown stores from 7 pm to 11 pm. The Parc de la Pépinnière also hosts an Expo Fair every May.

Best Things to Do in Gap (France)

Domaine de Charance

To get a real sense of Gap’s mountain environment, visit this château, which is surrounded by 220 hectares of stunning upland scenery. It’s laced with hiking trails and has a lake, deep forest, and humbling rock formations rising almost 2,000 meters.

Musée Muséum Départemental des Hautes-Alpes

There are many galleries here, but the archaeology exhibits are the most captivating. Hoards of Bronze Age torques, rings, daggers, and belts can be seen here.

Walk around the Old Town

Gap’s grid of old streets and alleyways gives you a sense of the Alps meeting Provence. Even though the roads are laid out as they were in medieval times, there needs to be more historic architecture.

 L’Auberge Marchand

Sitting at 17-19 Rue de France, the former Auberge Marchand appears to be an ordinary house…until you learn that it played a pivotal role in the history of France.

Gap Cathedral

After the medieval cathedral collapsed in the 19th century. A Neo-Gothic replacement was built in its place and completed in 1904. Historically, there was a temple to Apollo dating back to Roman times.

Village of Chaudun

Chaudun had more than 100 residents in the 19th century, but it was forced to sell its land to the state in 1891 because of its isolation and sterile setting. Ironically, it’s pretty easy to get to now since you can drive to the Col de Gleizé about 15 minutes away from Gap and then hike into forests, meadows, and beside ravines.

Parc de la Pépinière

The restorative surrounding the Departmental Museum has centuries-old trees shading its avenues. Summer and spring events are held on this elegant wrought-iron bandstand.

Weekly Markets

Saturday mornings in Gap’s old core, dozens of stalls occupy the narrow streets and compact squares. Place Jean Marcellin is filled with the market, which stretches along rue Carnot, rue de France, and rue Elysée.

Local Delicacies

Similar to doughnuts, but filled with various ingredients instead of dough. Savory varieties contain spinach, potato, cheese, or meat, while sweet varieties have pureed apples or prunes.

Station Gap-Bayard

Gap receives a lot of snow during the winter, but traditional Alpine skiing resorts are a bit farther away. A snow-based activity center with more than 50 kilometers of cross-country trails is just ten minutes away from Centre-Ville.
