Grenoble is located between the Drac and Isère rivers in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France. The city is known for its museums, universities, research centers, and winter sports base. “Les Bulles” (Bubbles) are spherical cable cars that connect the town to the summit of La Bastille hill, named after its 18th-century fortress.
Grenoble has been referred to since 43 B.C. when the city was first mentioned. At that time, Cularo was a Gallic village of the Allobroges tribe located near a bridge crossing the Isère. As insecurity grew in the late Roman empire, the town was surrounded by a strong wall in 286 AD.
Gratian made Cularo a Roman city after visiting the village and being touched by its people’s welcome. This resulted in Cularo being renamed Gratianopolis (“city of Gratian”) in 381 (which later became Graignovol and then Grenoble).
In 377 AD, the diocese of Grenoble was founded after Christianity spread to the region during the 4th century. In the years that followed, the bishops exercised considerable political power over the city. Grenoble’s bishops and princes used to call themselves that until the French Revolution.
The city became part of the Burgundian kingdom after the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 5th century and later joined the Holy Roman Empire in 1032. Between 942 and 970, the Burgundian rule was interrupted by Arab law based in Fraxinet.
When the Counts of Albon chose Grenoble as their capital in the 11th century, the city grew significantly. Grenoble’s central position allowed the Counts to expand their authority over a patchwork of territories scattered throughout the region. The State of Dauphiné later became Grenoble’s capital after they adopted the title “Dauphins.”
Despite their status, the Counts of Grenoble shared authority over the city with the Bishop of Grenoble. Saint Hugh was one of the most famous of them. His rule resulted in the reconstruction of the city’s bridge and the construction of a regular and a leper hospital.
Grenoble’s inhabitants gained recognition of their rights thanks to the conflicts between the Counts and the bishops. Louis XI and Francis I confirmed that charter in 1447 and 1541, respectively.
Mountains dominate geography in Grenoble. The region has three mountain ranges: the Chartreuse to the north, the Vercors to the west, and the Belledonne range to the east. The French Alps consider Grenoble their capital. An agglomeration (urban unit) centers around Grenoble.
