Groningen Overview
Groningen is a city in the northern Netherlands, where some of its original structures date back to the Middle Ages. One such building is the centuries-old Martinitoren clock tower. The adjoining Martinikerk is a large Gothic church with frescoes and a baroque organ. Inside you’ll see lots of frescoes that up the Gothic ambiance. Etymology
It’s not known for sure, but there are a few archeological and historical clues that may one day provide some insight into the origin of these names. The story seems old and sketchy, but it differs from other facts. This may be something that should be reconsidered. The Phrygians from Germany founded a settlement in what is now Groningen back in the second century. What is known today as Groningen was built on the bank of the Hunze River, which they called Grunoburg. The Vikings later destroyed it.
One modern theory is that ‘Groningen’ meant ‘among the people of Groni,’ derived from Gronesbeke, the old name for a small lake near the Hunze. Another theory is that the name was derived from the word green, meaning ‘green fields.
History
Groningen was settled by people originally from the North in 1040 AD, and it was in 1157 that it was mentioned in the Stedetaan, a document dating back to Copenhagen. Groningen is also around 2200 years old, making it one of the oldest cities in Europe. It is estimated that the oldest settlement in the region traces back to about 3950–3650 BC, whereas a significant payment was in place by 3 A.D.
For a long time, Groningen was an important commercial city that built a city wall to show its authority. Over time, it strongly influenced its surrounding lands, and the Gronings dialect became one of the most common languages. Until the end of the 15th century, Groningen was merely an insignificant town in size and importance. However, that all changed when a nearby province began administrating from it. That’s when the Martinitoren was built, considered one of the city’s most significant landmarks.
In 1536, the independent Dutch city of Groningen accepted the King of Spain and Habsburg ruler of the other Netherlands, Charles V as its ruler, and this ended the region’s autonomy. The city of Groningen was conquered by the forces of the Dutch Republic in 1594, which would later become part of the Netherlands.
This includes course offerings in law, medicine, theology, and philosophy. One of the things that makes this university special is that it was built in 1614, and at the same time, a new wall was built around the city. The Siege of Groningen (1672) was a pivotal event during the Third Anglo-Dutch War, it failed, and the city walls resisted using all their power. One year later, to commemorate the event, “Gronings Ontzet” or “Bo Day” is celebrated annually with music and fireworks on 28 August.
Historically, the Market Square and the main square of Groningen were damaged during WWII due to the Battle of Groningen. The church Martinitoren, Goudkantoor, and City Hall were undamaged by the destruction.

Groningen has an oceanic climate like most of the Netherlands but is a bit colder in winter due to its northeasterly location. The North Sea and maritime winds influence this climate.

Hotel, catering, and even business services all form a significant part of the economy in Groningen. Over time, they have all grown, and areas such as I.T., life sciences, and; biotech were created.
Until 2008 there were two major sugar refineries within the city of Groningen. One, the Suiker Unie plant, was constructed on the outskirts of Groningen but became a part of the city due to expansion in that area. CSM Vierverlaten in Hoogkerk remains the only beet sugar production plant in the town, primarily due to demand declines. Other notable companies in Groningen include publishing company Noordhoff Uitgevers, tobacco company Niemeyer, health insurance company Menzis, and distillery Hooghoudt. Natural gas companies GasUnie and; GasTerra also have a presence here.
Religion
Most people in Groningen are non-religious – with more than 70% of the population. The largest religion in Groningen is Christianity, but with 25.1%, a faith that doesn’t have a significant presence in the city.
Culture
Groningen is often called “The City of the North.” It is the central city of Northern Holland, focusing on education, business, music, and art. Groningen’s cultural scene is quite diverse because of its large student population, which has a variety of nationalities. The city is named after the Dutch saint Martin of Tours in recognition of its status as the “Martinitoren.”
