Gyor Overview

Győr is a city in northwestern Hungary, and it has a lot to offer in terms of its location. In addition to being halfway between Budapest and Vienna, Győr is sandwiched between Slovakia & Croatia on the other side of the Danube river. Budapest is one of the seven major regional centers in Hungary and the country’s sixth-largest city.

History

The ancient city of Varna, on the shores of the Danube River, is one of the largest and earliest settlements in Eastern Europe. It has been inhabited by varying cultures for thousands of years and flourished under Hellenistic rule in the 3rd century BCE. The town of Arrabona was originally known as Ara Bona before it shortened its name to Arrabona. Its two names are now used in several languages, including German (Raab) and Slovak (Ráb).

Roman merchants moved to Arrabona during the 1st century BCE. Around 10 CE, the Roman army occupied the northern part of Western Hungary, which they called Pannonia and where they built a Vicus (a minor town). Although it had a difficult time with attacks in the 4th century and many people tried to take their town, it has continued to be inhabited as of today.

Around 500 A.D. the territory was established by Slavs, in 547 A.D., the Lombards came, and in 568-800 AD by Austrasiatic peoples influenced by Western Europe. It was called Rabba in the 880s, but it became part of Great Moravia between 880 and 894 and had temporary rule under East Francia.

There are ancient Roman artifacts scattered around the town built by Hungary’s founder Stephen I when he founded an episcopate there. The Hungarians lived in tents and later in cottages in what is now the southeastern part of the city center. Hungary is often thought of as a success story, at least in the recent past. Yet this nation, which has occupied its current land for a thousand years or more, did not start as one. The town is evidence of that–examples include the Mongol invasion of 1241–1242 and the Czech military occupation.

Nádasdy and Cseszneky occupied the town of Mohács after the battle of Mohacs, while John Zápolya was also trying to annex it. The Ottomans occupied Hungary but the Győr commander thought this was futile. He devastated the town and Turkish forces found nothing but a destroyed building, hence the Turkish name for Győr, Yanık kale (“burnt castle”).

During the renovation, the town was surrounded by a castle and a city wall designed by the leading Italian builders of the era – this brought about a significant cultural change. After these years, when many new buildings were built in the Renaissance style, there came to be a new splendor on display. The main square became more beautiful than ever before.

In 1594, after the death of Count János Cseszneky, captain of Hungarian footsoldiers, the Ottoman army occupied the castle and the town. In 1597, after a military showdown between Hungary and Austria in which the Ottomans lost and became bankrupt for not thinking about paying their soldiers. Austrian troops took control of it again. During the Turkish occupation, the city was called Yanık Kala (burned place, as a reference to the enormous damages caused by the siege).

Climate

Győr is a town in Hungary with a lot of diversity throughout the year. The weather is typically 26°F to 80°F different during each season and doesn’t show much on average. Surrounded by the Danube and Mágnaros rivers, Győr is a popular tourist destination in Hungary. The best time to visit is from June to September when the weather will be warmest. The medieval center of Győr remains well preserved with many notable attractions worth an exploration.

Population

129,435 (2016)

Main sights

The ancient core of the city is Káptalan Hill at the confluence of three rivers. The residence of Győr’s bishops, Püspökvár, can be easily recognized by its incomplete tower. The oldest buildings in Győr are the 13th-century Dwelling Tower and 15th-century Gothic Dóczy Chapel, which originally belonged to a Romanesque church. It was rebuilt during the Gothic, Baroque & Rococo periods.

Economy

Audi AG subsidiary company Audi Hungaria Zrt. has a large factory in Győr, where the Audi TT sports car, the A3 Cabriolet, A3 Limousine, and many engines (1,913,053 engines in 2007) are built. They began producing them in 1994 and have been successful since. Audi began to assemble the Audi TT coupé, TT Roadster, and V6 and V8 engines. Eventually, they created a car called the Lamborghini S.p.A. adding in a V10 engine with help from Automobili Lamborghini S.p.. Audi is proud to have its V10s fully assembled here, but Lamborghini still manufactures their engines in Italy. By 2020, the factory will also have engines for other Volkswagen Group brands.

Transport

Győr is a national hub for rail and road traffic because it is a city located in an excellent position for transport. Győr-Sopron railway line, Győr-Celldömölk railway line, and the Győr-Veszprém railway run by MÁV are all important rail connections in Hungary. But arguably the most important is the Vienna-Budapest Railway Line. The city of Győr is accessible via main transport routes, which meet just outside the city center. It also has its international airport, which can be reached via Highway 81 – approximately 15 kilometers from the city center. The 1734 km section of the Danube lies near the port of Győr-Gönyű. This 25-hectare terminal serves boats and trains, allowing it to be fully equipped.

Sports

Győr is home to the Győri ETO Sport Club and the Győri ETO KC. They won the Champions League in 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019! Győr reached the finals of the EHF Cup Winners’ Cup in 2006, 1999, 2002, 2004, and 2005.

Győr is a football club located in Hungary. It has competed in the highest tier of Hungarian football, otherwise known as the 1992–2020 FC Győr 3rd League.

    – Győr is the third-most-historic city in Hungary, and a lot of those ruined buildings are found in the center of the old town. One impressive example is the straight streets that make up an uneven grid, which intersects with squares like Viennese Gate and Széchenyi Square.
  2. Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady

Káptalan Hill has had a troubled history since it was consecrated in the 11th century. In fact, during the same year that King Stephen I blessed our church back in 1096, it burned down. The Mongols flattened the Romanesque monument in 1241 and had to rebuild it in the 1630s.
  3. St Ignatius of Loyola Benedictine Church

    – Now the current structure of this sanctuary is based on Rome’s Gesù Church built in the Baroque style. It was designed in 1634-1641 by the Jesuits, and it is possible to tell that they were influenced by that architecture.

    – On top of this hill lies the fortified residential building of the bishop in Győr, with a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The keep at the heart of the complex has Gothic elements on its lower levels, built in 1250 AD during the Mongol invasion, and a Baroque pediment and balustrade at the top.
  5. Városháza (Town Hall)

    – Győr, Hungary is a busy town with several important landmarks. Town hall, which you can see from the most important intersection in town and where many famous landmarks are located is a popular tourist attraction in Győr. Its neo-Baroque style was created by Hüb.
  6. Bécsi Kapu Tér (Vienna Gate Square)

    – This beautiful plaza in Western Pest is known as Káptalan Hill, and it was praised by some of Europe’s most famous greats like Christian Pfitzer. People today come from far and wide to admire the beauty of the Rába River which used to sit at the bottom of Vienna Gate.
  7. Kármelita Templom (Carmelite Church)

    – Bécsi Kapu Tér is a busy street in the city of Budapest. The southern end of the street is dominated by the yellow-painted Carmelite Church. It’s impossible to miss its single onion-domed tower – it’s one of the most recognizable sights on this bustling thoroughfare!
  8. Diocesan Treasury, Library, and Lapidary

  14. Pannonhalma Archabbey
