History
Haarlem has a rich history dating back to pre-medieval times and is connected to Alkmaar via a strip of land atop the strandwal. The I.J. is a tributary of the North Sea and only features in this region’s landscape. The people on this narrow strip of land struggled against the waters from the west and the other rivers that flow through it – Haarlem Lake and the North Sea.
The shipping industry and Amsterdam mainly had a buoyant trade during the Dutch Golden Age. Over time, Halfweg became a suburb, and Haarlem became a quieter bedroom community, allowing the remnants of its central medieval buildings to remain intact. Religion
Perhaps Haarlem’s most famous church is the Catholic parish church on Drakenstein. The church was founded in the 9th century and has remained an important Christian site. Contrary to popular belief, it was not the Grote Kerk on the Grote Markt (central market square) that received its first indulgence but a wooden church on another site instead. The city of Haarlem was granted this privilege with Clement V during the Avignon Papacy in 1309. Today, Haarlem is one of the most popular tourist destinations in The Netherlands. Climate
Although the winters are long, they are often cold, and the summers tend to be hot and humid. It is primarily cloudy year-round in Haarlem, and the weather is warm from late June to early September. Festivals
Every year in April, the Haarlem Flower Parade takes place. The floats covered in flowers drive from Noordwijk through Haarlem to be on display for a day there. In June, there’s also a funfair on the Grote Markt and the Zaanenlaan in Haarlem-Noord. Other festivals are held on the Grote Markt, including the annual Haarlem Jazz and More and Haarlem Culinair, two music festivals, and the biannual Haarlemse Stripdagen.

Dutch clubs have existed for a long time, and two of the oldest ones are Tennis Club Haarlem and Judo Association Kenamju.
Haarlem is world-renowned for hosting several international sports tournaments: the Haarlem Baseball Week, a baseball event held every two years at the Pim Mulier Stadium, and the Haarlem Basketball Classic, an intercollegiate basketball event. Haarlem also hosted the women’s Softball World Championship in 2014.
In 1891, the first international bandy match was played between associations from two locations – Haarlem and Bury Fen Bandy Club. Today there are leagues across Europe and Northern America, but rink bandy is a threatening game.
Transport
Haarlem is served by two railway stations–one in the city center and one on the outskirts. From Haarlem station, eight trains go to Amsterdam per hour with a journey time of 15 minutes to 20 minutes. Six trains go to Leiden and The Hague, while two go to Zandvoort. In the east of Haarlem, there is a train station in Haarlem Spaarnwoude, which has four trains per hour to Amsterdam (17 hours 15 minutes).
Connexxion is a bus line that serves the city of Haarlem and gets you to your destination quickly and efficiently. These buses provide an efficient, reliable transport option for people heading toward Schiphol Airport or other places in Haarlem.
Train and tram
The “Haarlemmertrekvaart” was muddy and wet, but it took three years to build the first track. This canal connected Amsterdam with Haarlem and was first opened in 1839 as a part of the Dordrecht-Rotterdam railway. The train was going at around 40 km/h (25 mph). The arrival of the railway in 1872 saw a brand new station rise in Haarlem, which helped boost the city’s economy – now, that same station is a historical monument. This arrival gave a significant boost to the economy of Amsterdam as well.
