Transport

The town of Hengelo
Although archeological evidence suggests that the place has been inhabited for thousands of years, the municipality was founded in 1802. There were a few hundred farms and houses for agricultural workers then.
In the 19th century, during the industrial revolution, Hengelo expanded into a small village and was never granted city rights. As a result of the construction of a critical railway junction in the late 19th century, the city rapidly developed. Attracted by this were Stork B.V., Hazemeyer, N.V., Brush HMA, Brush-Barclay, Eaton Corporation, Essent, Heemaf BV, Vattenfall, and Wabtec (now part of Alstom), KHZ (now AkzoNobel), and Hollandse Signaal Apparaten, which Thales now owns. Hengelo Bier, a local brewery, was based in Hengelo. Twents beer is currently brewed at the De Twentse Bierbrouwerij in Hengelo. Hazemeijer factory complex was the site of this brewery until 2019. It was founded in 2007 and was located there until 2019.
Due to the railways and local factories’ war industry activities, the Allies frequently bombed the city during World War II. Several hundred people were killed when the heart of Hengelo was accidentally destroyed during the bombing on 6 and 7 October 1944.

Climate
Due to its inland location, Hengelo experiences a milder winter than the rest of the Netherlands due to its oceanic climate (Köppen classification: Cfb). As a result, the summers here are warmer than in coastal areas. Derelict since 2012, the former military airport still houses the weather station of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute.

There are seven high schools in Hengelo. Montessori College Twente, Bataafs Lyceum, Twickel College, Avila College, Gilde College, Grundel Lyceum, and Grundel Parkcollege are these high schools.
