The city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch is known colloquially as Den Bosch, and it is the capital of the Netherlands’ North Brabant province. It has a population of 157,486 and is located in a valley in the municipality.
150,889 (2015)
The city’s official name, ‘Amsterdam,’ is a contraction of the Dutch words ‘Amstel’ and ‘dam’ – which mean hill and water, respectively. The duke in question was Henry I of Brabant, whose family had owned a large estate nearby Orthen for at least four centuries before owning parts of modern-day Amsterdam. The town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch was founded in 1185 by Radboud. This is usually the date given by later chroniclers, but many historians think it may have been established as early as 1178. It has city rights and trade privileges to support its economy that were granted one year later in 1186. The original charter of Amsterdam has gone missing; it was written by the founder, who intended for the city to be a fortress and to protect his interests against outsiders. He wants his descendants (the Patrons) to remain in control of this very foundation. The city of Bruges in Belgium was destroyed for the first time in 1203 after King Philip of France captured it. It was soon rebuilt, and many remnants of the original city walls remain.
In the late 14th century, Amsterdam was rapidly expanding, so an enormous wall was erected to protect its inhabitants. Artificial waterways were dug at that time and ultimately were used to form a moat. Eventually, these rivers were diverted and served as city water sources and were born in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and home to one of the most important painters of the Northern Renaissance period, Hieronymus Bosch. Even though the fire happened over 550 years ago, it’s likely that Bosch witnessed the disaster and was inspired by its vivid imagery.
Until 1520, the city flourished, becoming the second-largest population center in the territory of the present-day Netherlands. The town was also a music center, and composers, including Jheronimus Clibano, received training there. Other people have held roles at the ‘s-Hertogenbosch: one such person is Matthaeus Pipelare, who was the musical director of this place. Moreover, Pierre Alamire was a renowned composer and copyist who had done much of his work here.
Year-round mild temperatures and adequate rainfall characterize the Pacific Coast. The Köppen Climate Classification subtype for this climate is “Cfb.”
‘s-Hertogenbosch is the fourth city in North Brabant, and it is a center of industry, education, administration, and culture. It houses many major national and international businesses, such as Heineken, Epic, and Tyco International. Jeroen Bosch Hospital is the largest employer in the area and has over 4,000 employees.
Amsterdam is home to various events like the theatre festival Boulevard, Jazz in Duketown, hip hop in duke town, the start of the Tour de France (1996), Tour Feminin NL (1997), and many more! The International Vocal Competition, November Music (a contemporary music festival), and the UNICEF Open (formerly the Ordina Open) grass court tennis tournament (in the nearby town of Rosmalen). There are also over 350 restaurants, pubs, and cafés in our neighboring towns.
‘s-Hertogenbosch is also home to the European Ceramic Work Centre. This program was initiated in 2007 by the Dutch Government. It is a juried international ceramic residency that invites artists, designers, and architects worldwide to explore pottery of all levels of training.
The most well-known specialty of our local city is a giant dessert, truly a U shape with the top being shorter and wider than the bottom. It’s filled with sweet whipped cream and coated with chocolate.
Maaslands (the variant spoken in ‘s-Hertogenbosch is called Bosch, which is placed among the Central North Brabantian dialects, although other classification systems also describe it as East Brabantian), which has traditionally been classified as a dialect of Dutch.
Den Bosch has one professional football club – F.C. Den Bosch. It is a successor of the professional football team of BVV and Wilhelmina. Both of them still exist as amateur football clubs. Den Bosch had already been the dominant soccer club in The Netherlands for several years when they have crowned champions in 1948. This competition led to the construction of stadium De Vliert, which at one time could hold a capacity of 30,000. After a less successful period, F.C. Den Bosch can only accommodate 8,500 people for matches. But before Ruud van Nistelrooy became an international star, the club was already known for its international players.
The success of a sporting team can often be determined by how much success the team has had in competitions. H.C. Den Bosch is better at hockey at home. The women’s team, in particular, is incredibly dominant – they’re number one and beating other teams quickly. The successful professional basketball club, New Heroes Den Bosch, also resides in the city. Even more remarkable is that The Dukes rugby club dates back to 1974 and is located at a very scenic location. As the club was tiny, it relied on artificial turf and had a lot of junior members. That being said, in 2008, the Dukes became national champions!
In 2017, the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships were hosted in the city. The event took place before Wimbledon to allow a less eventful period leading up to the prestigious tournament. The World Archery Championships and World Para Archery Championship were held in June 2019. Both events occurred at the Dukes’ stadium, with all finals occurring in an arena. The Parade is a historic square at the foot of Saint John’s Cathedral in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The trees around it add to its beauty, making it one of the most attractive locations in the center of town.
‘s-Hertogenbosch is a city that is located on the busy A2 highway, which is the country’s most important north-south connection. The city also houses a station that belongs to the Utrecht–Boxtel segment of this national railway system.
‘s-Hertogenbosch is a city with several vocational universities. HAS Hogeschool has about 3,500 students who study agricultural and food technology. Avans Hogeschool is focused on business and law but offers some food technology certificates. The AKV St. Joost is an art academy that is now part of Avant and dates back to 1812, as does Fontys Hogeschool. Each of these institutions also offers some courses. Jheronimus Academy of Data Science provides graduate and post-graduate programs in data science. They are located at the Mariënburg Campus in central ‘s-Hertogenbosch and part of Eindhoven University.
The City Gymnasium is a gymnasium that traces its origins back to 1274. It is comparable to a grammar school and is used in secondary education. A wide range of education is available from large and small institutes.
Most people in the city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, identify as Roman Catholics. Mass attendance has generally declined for the last several decades, yet St. John’s Cathedral, one of just a few churches left in the city center, still sees crowds at least once a week. Most churches fall into one of two categories: big or smaller. When it comes to smaller churches in use by the Roman Catholic church, you might know them by one of their many names, including St. Anne’s Church in Hingham, St. Anne’s in Deuteren, St. Lambert’s in Rosmalen, and more.
I had always wanted to visit ‘s-Hertogenbosch, but it didn’t receive much attention even though it’s only an hour away from Amsterdam. I needed to learn more about the city, so I researched before heading there. The guide was certainly worth it!
Some historic landmarks include the town hall, which was built in 1671 and is one of the oldest buildings in the country. It also served as a Protestant church from 1619-1520, rebuilt on a Romanesque foundation. The Flamboyant Gothic St. John’s Cathedral is another important landmark that has been standing since 1419-1520. There is a statue of Hieronymus Bosch in the Town Hall Square in the Netherlands, and he was born in October 1480 and died in October 1516 during a plague epidemic.
