Hilversum Overview
The city and municipality of Hilversum are located in North Holland, the Netherlands. It is located in the heart of the Gooi and is the area’s largest urban center. Heathlands, woods, meadows, lakes, and smaller towns surround the city.
Radio, television, and newspaper companies have headquarters, studios, and broadcast stations—the Netherlands’ mediated (media city) in Hilversum.
Town
Hilversum is located 24 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of Amsterdam and 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) north of Utrecht. Willem Marinus Dudok designed the town’s 1931 Town Hall (Raadhuis Hilversum), known for its architectural significance.
Hilversum has a public library, two swimming pools (Van Hellemond Sport and De Lieberg), sports halls, and shopping centers (such as Hilvertshof, Winkelcentrum Kerkelanden, De Riebeeckgalerij, and Winkelcentrum Seinhorst). Known locally as het dorp, meaning “the village,” the city’s center is the town’s heart.
Geography
Hilversum is situated on the sandy and hilly parts of the Gooi and has four hills: the closest to the town center is the Boomberg. There is also the Trompenberg (now a luxury residential area where a.o. the Brenninkmeijer family of C&A-fame lives), the Hoorneboeg (25m), and two km east of the Zwaluwenberg, where the inspector general’s headquarters has been since 1950. Glatschers pushed earth walls before them during the Ice Age, causing these hills to exist. The glitches reached Hilversum at the farthest southern point.

Hilversum has several international schools, including Violenschool and International School Hilversum “Alberdingk Thijm.” Hilversum is also the European headquarters of Nike, Hunkemöller, and Converse.
History
The Hilversum culture gets its name from earthenware found in Hilversum, which dates back to the early- to mid-Bronze Age, or 1800–1200 BC. The first Hilversum residents may have emigrated from southern Britain based on the similarities between their artifacts and those of the Wessex Culture of southern Britain.
The first brick settlements formed around 900. However, Hilversum was not officially mentioned until 1305 (“Hilfersheem” from “Hilvertshem,” meaning “houses between the hills”). In those days, it belonged to Naarden, one of the oldest towns in Gooi.
In the Middle Ages, farming, sheep raising, and wool manufacturing provided the Gooi with their livelihoods. Hilversum became an independent city for the first time in 1424. As a result, new industrial development was no longer dependent on permission from Naarden, allowing the village to grow further.
Several canals connected the town indirectly to Amsterdam in the 17th century, when the Dutch economy entered its golden age.
It was destroyed by fire in 1725 and 1766, leveling parts of the old townhouse and the adjacent church. Despite these setbacks, the town’s textile industry developed, among other things, by weaving cow hair.
As a result of the railway link to Amsterdam in 1874, a substantial textile and tapestry industry emerged in the 19th century. The town overgrew from that time, with wealthy commuters from Amsterdam moving in, building large villas in the wooded surroundings, and gradually moving there permanently. Hilversum has never been granted city rights, so it is still known as “het dorp” or “the village” by locals.
Culture
The large neo-gothic Catholic church of St. Vitus (P.J.H. Cuypers, 1892, bell tower 96 meters, 315′).
Landscape artists such as Barend Cornelis Koekkoek lived and worked in the city during the 19th century.
A major European Tennis tournament was held in the city in the 1950s and 1960s.
