Hoorn Overview
The town of Hoorn in the Dutch province of North Holland is the site of a former Dutch East India Company base. Located north of Amsterdam on the IJsselmeer, this town is surrounded by water. Roode Steen, the town’s main square, is surrounded by shops and cafes dating back to the 17th century. There is a 16th-century tower called the Hoofdtoren in the harbor. It includes the Westfries Museum, which displays paintings from the Westfrisian Golden Age.
Etymology
There are myths surrounding the origin of the name Hoorn, also known as Hoern, Horne, or Hoirn(e). Hornus, a bastard son of King Redbad and brother of Aldgillis II, supposedly founded the city in 719 and named it after himself, according to old Frisian legends. Another theory claims the name derives from a sign depicting a post-horn hung from a tavern established by brewers from Hamburg in the early fourteenth century.
Early history
Viking raids ignited unrest in the Frisian Kingdom at the beginning of the eighth century, causing many people to leave their hometowns. Based on this example, Hornus, a bastard son of Redbad, allegedly moved west with his companions in 719 and founded his settlement west of the Vlie river. Sadly, this legendary settlement wasn’t around for long, as it burned down after a few years.
The site of present-day Hoorn was swampy in the Middle Ages, unsuitable for agriculture as opposed to the more fertile inland. A marketplace was created within the domain of Zwaag to exchange excess dairy products for other goods due to overproduction. Markets Places were located near sluices in rivers (Gouw and Zuiderzee), the most convenient passageways into the Zuiderzee.
In exchange for butter and cheese, foreign traders sold their goods (mostly beer) to the local population at the marketplace, particularly from Hamburg and Bremen. Three brothers from Hamburg also settled in the area, recognizing its convenient location and building inns near the market to sell their beers. In 1316, these buildings were completed, which led to an expansion of the settlement as merchants from Northern Germany and Denmark began visiting to trade. Consequently, Hoorn became a village soon after the territory became a village. William V, Count of Holland, awarded Hoorn city rights in 1357 after a lump sum payment of 1,550 children was made.
Geography
On the northwestern shore of Markermeer, the Netherlands’ second largest freshwater lake, Hoorn lies east of the North Holland peninsula. Located at the northernmost end of a small bay named Hoornse Hop, the city occupies an arc of land south of West Friesland. Most of Hoorn’s landscape is flat, and its only elevated areas are its dikes on the southern edge. Noord-Holland Noord and Hollands Noorderkwartier are the safety regions for the municipality.
Climate
Hoorn has an oceanic climate (Köppen: Cfb) influenced by the proximity of the North Sea to the west, which produces prevailing westerly winds. Winters can be pretty cold, and summers can be quite warm, but both are considered mild.
It is moderately warm in the summer, with several hot days throughout the month. Hoorn experiences a daily high of 21.6 °C (70.9 °F) in August and 30 °C (86 °F) or higher only 1.8 days per year on average (2009-2018), which places Hoorn in AHS heat zone 2. There are usually a few snowy days each year as well.
