Hyeres Overview
On the Mediterranean coast of France, Hyères is a town. There is a relic of a medieval castle on the hillside of its old town, as well as centuries-old walls. A 1920s modernist building with gardens houses the Villa Noailles arts center. Scores of waterbirds nest in salt marshes on the Giens peninsula. One of the Golden Isles, Porquerolles, is an offshore island with beaches, trails, and underwater shipwrecks.
History
The Hellenic city of Olbia (Greek: Ὀλβία) was refounded on the Phoenician settlement that dated to the fourth century B.C.; Strabo describes Olbia (IV.1.5) as a fortified city of the Massiliotes which was defending it against the Salyes and the Ligures who lived in the Alps.”. The area has been discovered to have Roman and Greek antiquities.
The first mention of Hyères dates back to 963, and the Viscount of Marseilles initially owned it before being transferred to Charles of Anjou. In 1254, King Louis IX of France (sometimes referred to as “St Louis”) landed at Hyères after returning from the crusades.
In the 12th century, outside the city walls, a commandry of the Knights Templar was based in the town. Saint-Blaise tower is the only remaining remnant.
Walter Krivitsky defected from Soviet intelligence in 1937 and hid in Hyères (one of the furthest points in France from his operational base in Paris).
Off the coast of Hyères, the First Special Service Force landed on 15 August 1944 to take Port-Cros and Levant islands as part of Operation Dragoon. There was little resistance from the small German garrisons, and the eastern part of Port-Cros was secured by 06:30. In the evening, the fighting on the Levant was over, but German troops withdrew into thick-walled fortifications on Port-Cros. They realized further resistance was futile only when naval guns were brought to bear.
The next phase of the operation began on 18 August 1944 with an intense naval barrage aimed at the largest of the Hyères islands, Porquerolles. On 22 August, the French forces occupied the island, including maritime units, colonial formations, and Senegalese infantry. As the Germans refused to surrender to the Senegalese, US-Canadian Special Forces captured large numbers of prisoners at the eastern end of Porquerolles.
Geography
Due to its location facing the Mediterranean to the south, it is very popular with tourists during the winter and is ideal for growing palm trees. The area exports approximately 100,000 trees each year. In this sense, Hyères-les-Palmiers (palmiers means palm trees) is often referred to as a palm tree town.
Climate
Hyères is one of the warmest cities in France and has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csa). It has mild winters and hot summers, with maximum temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F). With barely 57 rainy days a year and almost no rain during the summer, it is also one of the driest cities in France.

Old Town

Near the top of the Plage de l’Almanarre, Greek colonists from Phocaea founded this ancient settlement. Olbia would have served as a trading and defensive outpost for the larger colony in present-day Marseille.
Giens
Provece’s southernmost peninsula, so far south that it has the same latitude as the north of Corsica. On the mainland, Giens is connected to the mainland by long, parallel sandy spits on either side of large expanses of salt marshes and ponds.
Parc Saint-Bernard
This town built its fortune on palm plantations, so it would be remiss not to visit a few of its sublime gardens. Under Villa Noaille, Parc Saint-Bernard, also designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens, has short stairways that lead to stone terraces.
Tour des Templiers
This military-looking tower used to be the commandry of the Knights Templar on Place Massillon. The building is the only surviving feature from the 1100s that was once home to a barn, cellar, mill, and furnace.
Parc Olbius-Riquier
This expansive park was created in 1868 from land bequeathed to the town to study and cultivate tropical species.
