The commune of Issy-les-Moulineaux lies along the left bank of the Seine in the southwest suburbs of Paris, France. The citizens of Isséen are called Isséens in French. In addition to being one of Paris’ entrances, it is 6.6 kilometers from Notre Dame Cathedral, considered France’s Kilometre zero.
Having successfully moved from a manufacturing base to a high-value service sector, Issy-les-Moulineaux is centered in the Val de Seine business district, which houses the headquarters of most major French television networks, and the largest cluster of telecommunications and media companies in France.
Name
At first, Issy-les-Moulineaux was called Issy. The name Issy is derived from Medieval Latin Issiacum or Isciacum, possibly meaning “estate of Isicius (or Iccius), a Gallo-Roman landowner, although some think it comes from the Celtic radical meaning “under the woods.” An alternative origin of the name is attributed to a temple of the Egyptian goddess Isis, said to be underneath the church of Saint Stephen, as described on the city’s official website.
History
The Battle of Issy was fought in and around the village between Prussian and French forces in July 1815. It was the last action of the Hundred Days campaign and the previous attempt to defend Paris against the Seventh Coalition armies.
Previously, the town was home to the Château d’Issy, destroyed in 1871, once owned by the Princes of Conti. Paris was enlarged by annexing neighboring communes on 1 January 1860. As a result, the commune of Issy-les-Moulineaux, now part of the 15th arrondissement of Paris, was annexed to Paris.
Issy-les-Moulineaux is home to 5,000 Armenians who have settled there since the 1930s. A monument commemorating the Armenian genocide is located in the community, which also has two Armenian churches, an athletic club, a school, a street named in honor of Armenia, such as Rue d’Armenie, and a street named in honor of Armenia’s capital Yerevan, Rue d’Erevan. In December 1989, Issy-les-Moulineaux and Echmiadzin, Armenia, became twin cities.

In addition to Les Moulineaux, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, and Issy–Val de Seine stations on Paris Métro Line 12, Issy-les-Moulineaux is served by three Île-de-France tramways: Line 2, Issy–Val de Seine, and Corentin Celton. RATP has stops or arrival/departure stations throughout the city for multiple bus lines.

Cable cars were also planned but abandoned in February 2008.
