A commune in France’s Val-de-Marne department, Ivry-sur-Seine is located in the southeastern suburbs of Paris. A distance of 5.3 kilometers separates it from the center of Paris. In addition to bordering the commune, the Quartier Asiatique in Paris’ 13th arrondissement is now extending into northern Ivry.
Name
Originally, Ivry-sur-Seine was known as Ivry. As a Gallo-Roman landowner, Eburius (the Latinized form of Eburos’ patronym) probably owned the estates of Ivry in Medieval Latin Ivriacum or Ibriacum.
To distinguish it from other communes of France, also called Ivry, the commune officially became Ivry-sur-Seine in 1897.
History
In 1860, neighboring communes were annexed by Paris, expanding the city. As a result, a third of the commune of Ivry-sur-Seine was annexed to Paris and today forms the Chinatown area of the 13th arrondissement.
Ivry-sur-Seine is perhaps best known as the place where Jean Bastien-Thiry was executed in March 1963. Joyce and Beckett both visited Lucia Joyce’s daughter at the commune’s hospital in 1936, where she received psychiatric treatment.
