Jurmala Overview
Jūrmala is one of Latvia’s most popular tourist destinations and has a variety of interesting attractions. They include a wide selection of wooden, art nouveau seaside villas. There are also Soviet-era sanatoriums and a long, sandy beach. Near the beach, you’ll find Dzintari Concert Hall, which is located near Dzintari Forest Park. At this location, the Jūrmala City Museum exhibits an accumulation of objects which illustrate Jūrmala’s history.
Names
The name “Jūrmala” comes from Latvian words for “sea” and “edge”, meaning that is the coast in English.
History
The city of Jūrmala is made up of several small hotels. From west to east, these include Ķemeri, Jaunķemeri, Sloka, Kauguri, Vaivari, Asari, Melluži, Pumpuri, and others.
Jūrmala has a long history of being a vacation spot, with wealthy landowners coming centuries ago to take it easy at the seaside. Russian army officers came here after fighting in Napoleon’s wars and returned with relief that they didn’t have to fight anymore and could finally relax, bringing more people. The town of Jūrmala has been predominantly a tourist destination, however, this wasn’t always the case. And it was a railway opening in 1877 that saw Jūrmala become a tourist hotspot for some time. Jūrmala is also known for being a health spa. The sea breeze, pine aroma, mineral springs, and sandy beach promotes many sanatoriums to develop around the city.
In USSR, Jūrmala was a popular resort amongst Communist officials because of the beach and sanatoriums as holidays were given out as rewards to top union members. It soon became one of the most popular holiday destinations in the USSR. The spas offer facilities for mud baths, hiking, and concerts. In the summer there are many to choose from!
Although Riga has worked hard to help tourists, Jūrmala hasn’t. They’re just now starting to change things to become more attractive to visitors. The number of Russian visitors to this region has been reduced during the past few years, yet Jurnjala’s tourist industry is now starting to recover. Although its beaches have not attracted many Europeans as yet, Russians coming here don’t need a visa these days. Many Russian celebrities, successful businessmen, and others buy houses near the beach and a variety of festivals and other activities are held every summer. At the moment, Jūrmala is close to returning to its previous popularity with this influx of visitors.
The main beach at Higashi-Majori and another beach at Bulduri have been recognized as clean beaches. The Latvian Academy of Science also has a hotel in Higashi-Majori City, as well as their summer festival, the Midsummer Festival, which is held every year on June 23rd. The “Jaunais Vilnis” New Wave (competition) music festival showcases the latest music from all over Europe. The Lonely Planet guide to Latvia states that it is one of the highlights of the region.
Sports
The 2017 European Beach Volleyball Championships took place from the 16th – the 20th of August. There were 32 men’s and 32 women’s teams with a 100,000 EUR prize pot per gender. Latvia’s best men’s team consisting of Aleksandr Samoilovs and Jānis Šmēdiņš took home the silver medal, losing 2-0 to Italy in the finals. The Latvian women’s national volleyball team is doing well, but they lost in the quarterfinals against Germany. 2,800 fans were able to set up a temporary stadium on Major beach for most games.
The 2012 Winter World Championships were hosted in Latvia in Jan. 2012, making it the 3rd international host of the event, following Finland and France.
Spartaks FK is a Latvian football club based in Jūrmala with a 5000 capacity. They’ve been champions of Latvia twice in the last two years.
The Baltic Open, part of the WTA Tour, is coming to Lithuania in July 2019 and will be held in Lielupe at the National Tennis Center.
Festivals
During the Soviet era, Jūrmala was the site of a music festival that was hugely successful: “Jūrmala” (1986-1993).
Jūrmala has been hosting the “New Wave” competition for young pop singers from all over Europe since 2001. This event typically takes place every July. Due to a ban on Russian artists, this event may or may not take place this year.
The Jūrmala International Piano Competition is arranged by the Latvian Piano Teachers Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of Latvia. The International Academic Music Competition is a competition held every two years in the “Dzintari” concert hall for pianists from all countries that are under the age of 19.
