Kaposvar Overview

Kaposvár is a city in Somogy County of Hungary and the capital of the district. It is one of the leading cities of Transdanubia and it has county rights. The city’s K -shaped layout in its Old Town, as well as its unusual 19th-century architecture, are quintessential elements that have made it a popular tourist attraction.

Etymology

Kaposvár’s name is derived from the Hungarian words “kapu” and “vár” – gate and castle. It has at times also been known as Kapoşvar, Rupertsdorf, and Kapusdërg in other languages – Turkish, Slovene, and Croatian.

Symbols

The colors of the flag are yellow and green, which symbolize prosperity and loyalty. The castle has three battlements with loopholes as it is a city in Hungary as well as a castle.

Geography

Kaposvár is a beautiful city surrounded by hills near the banks of the Kapos river and Zselics forests. It is located 186 miles (300 km) southwest of Budapest, Hungary.

Kaposvár has historically been a crossroads for trade. It arrived by the Kapos river which posed a threat to the river valley region, and on it was built flood protections that helped reduce the risk. Despite its size, the city is still one of Europe’s largest and is neglected because of infrastructural issues. It is surrounded by railways such as the European Railway line from Budapest to the Mediterranean Sea.

History

Kaposvár is a medieval city erected on seven hills, making it one of Hungary’s most important strongholds. The city was founded by Celtic tribes around 5,000 BC and it had been inhabited since that time. By around 9 AD, the area was a part of the Roman province of Pannonia. After years of continued foreign conquest, the Romans eventually pulled out in 107 AD. Then tribal groups such as Germans and Illyrians assimilated into Slavic and German settlements respectively by 900 AD.

The name of the settlement was first recorded in 1009 as Kapos in Saint Stephen’s memorandum of association, which established the borders of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pécs. This is an important ancient document and named many other things on today’s Budapest city map. In 1061, King Atha founded a Benedictine monastery in Somogy; the first castle in Kapos was built by King Béla IV during a time of Mongol invasion.

After this battle Ottoman troops captured the area, turning it into a small military camp and administrative area. They occupied the city for 131 years, with time passing just as easily as sand through their fingers. In 1686, Habsburg troops recaptured the city. They retook the castle, which had been under Ottoman control for decades, and also captured surrounding areas.

In the 18th century, the city was in decline. The castle of Kapos was razed by the Habsburgs in 1702 and much of its remaining structures were destroyed as part of the uprising and war known as Rákóczi’s War for Independence in 1703.

In 1748, the Esterházy family was responsible for part of the city’s reconstruction and resettlement. It gained the right to hold markets in 1703 and the first school was built in 1715. Since 1749, the city of Green has been the county seat. The population also doubled from 1710 up until 1780.

Kaposvár was developed as an industrial hub partially due to its proximity to the railway between Buda and Zagreb. 1n addition, new medical & cultural institutions were founded in the city like a pharmacy, and genetic research institute. As the city grew during this period, not only did it develop new roads, but it also built something else that is quite a big deal: the county hall & town hall.
