Kecskemét is a city in central Hungary. It’s the 8th-largest city in the country, and it has county rights, meaning that it’s considered the government seat of Kiskun County.
Kecskemet is located halfway between Budapest and Szeged and is close to both big rivers of the country – Danube & Tisza. There are two centers in the Hungarian Southern Great Plain region, Szeged in the center of Csongrád county and Debrecen in the center of Bács-Kiskun county.
It’s said that the name of the city stems from the Hungarian word kecske meaning “goat” and -mét meaning “pass.”
Kecskemét is a city in Hungary’s north-western part of the country, on the border of three counties. It was established at the meeting point of two sandy regions and two sandy soils, but due to its low elevation to sea level, its territory is covered by wind-blown sand that makes all unique characteristics. By the beginning of the 19th century, there was a serious depletion of natural vegetation and overgrazing had destroyed what plants were left. This led to problems with erosion and the potential for sand to affect the town. There has been a lot of reforestation and plantings that were done to stabilize soil that was significantly damaged due to forest fires.
The Kecskemét region has a continental climate, meaning it experiences warm, dry weather conditions most of the time. The region is also able to produce well-known agricultural products like wheat, apricots, red peppers, and tomatoes. In Kecskemét, July is the month with an average temperature of 20.9 °C (69.6 °F); January is the month with the coldest temperature of −1.9 °C (28.6 °F).
The first archaeological discovery of a human being in the area dates back to 3600 BC. The area of Sarmatia was invaded by the Sarmatians in the first century B.C. Since then, the area has been inhabited by a variety of cultures. Historian János Hornyik believed that Partiskum was part of Jazygia and lived from at least the 5th century A.D. There is consensus among historians that permanent settlement took place in the region only after 1241, with the conquest of Hungary by King Bela IV. There were seven villages in the area at that time; each had a population of between 200 and 300 individuals. Some of the villages on these shores were destroyed by the Mongol invasion, while others were revived at the time. The Cumanians that colonized these land went on to be a new foundation for these cities and towns with their different architecture & culture.
Kecskemét was founded soon after 1368 as a trading center. It became increasingly popular during imports & exports and grew into a sizable settlement. The town has been recognized by the King of Hungary in one charter, making Kecskemét an oppidum (town). The town’s location relative to other trade routes, as well as its economic activity and relative density, attracted more traders & craftsmen who made the town their home. This included Jews & people of other faiths who became part of the population, providing a rich cultural heritage.
Turkish settlers seeking refuge from their homes in other villages sought protection in Kecskemét. The town had defensive palisades to protect it and was far enough away from the spahis who oppressed them. Kecskemét, Hungary had the special advantage of being protected by the Pasha of Buda and had a tax deal to preserve their town. New businesses, games & entertainment events were exactly what this town needed to revitalize itself.
Kecskemét gradually absorbed the lands of those who had taken refuge in the town. Residents created a large common field for the animals they were breeding. By the beginning of the 18th century, residents held nearly 30,000 cattle, which grazed on an area equivalent to nearly four football fields.
In March 2012, automobile manufacturer Daimler AG opened a plant nearby Kecskemét, to manufacture the new B-Class, A-Class, and CLA-Class models. Stuttgart invested $1.24 billion to build its new plant and is expected to provide more than 100,000 jobs in the region over the next few years. This is a great investment and will hopefully increase employment in Germany at large.
In the 1900s, Hungary became industrialized and public transportation was developed in Kecskemét by trams for a population of 50,000 people. This only took place after World War II, when buses also began traveling in the city. In 2010, the city launched several trolley bus lines & in 2011 it completely rebuilt the town center as a trolleybus and pedestrian area.
There is a large Hungarian population in Kecskemét, with a few thousand Romani residents as well. The city has 107267 residents as of 2001. The city of Eastern Europe had a Jewish population before World War II which led to a thriving synagogue. The majority of the Jews in the area were deported by the Nazi forces in 1944 and some died during the transfer.
