Komárom is an old settlement located at the confluence of the Danube (Rom. Ister) and Váh rivers. These findings date back to the Neolithic, Eneolithic, and Bronze Age periods. The area surrounding Komárom has many archaeological remains that indicate the Celts settled there towards the end of the 1st century B.C.

The Roman Empire expanded its frontiers over Pannonia (present-day Transdanubia) during the first century A.D. Brigetio was a military camp and settlement established by the Romans on the southern shores of the Danube. A fortification chain protected the base and town along the Danube shore. At the beginning of the 2nd century, Celemantia (near modern-day Issa) was built as a fortified bridgehead on the Danube. Due to the site’s strategic importance, some historians believe that the Komárom Castle once had a Roman fortress similar to that on the site. However, excavations have not yet confirmed this theory. When barbarian tribes began to strengthen their attacks on the Romans in the 4th century, the Romans gradually moved out of Pannonia.

There have been excavations from the 7th and 8th centuries A.D. containing Gothic, Slavic, and Avar artifacts. Komárom was one of the last resorts of the Avars after their empire collapsed at the end of the 8th century. Shipyard graves are the most significant Avar discoveries. One hundred fifty-three graves are from the 7th–9th centuries, making them one of the important Avar discoveries in the Carpathian Basin.
