A commune in western France’s Pays de la Loire region, La Roche-sur-Yon, is part of the Vendée department. Located in the center of the department, it is the capital. The inhabitants of the area are called Lyonnais.
History
On 25 May 1804, Napoleon I made the town the new prefecture of the Vendée, replacing Fontenay-le-Comte (then called Fontenay-le-Peuple). A new population of soldiers and civil servants was brought into Napoléonville, which had been renamed after the Vendée Revolt (1793–96). The town of Napoleonville was designed to accommodate 15,000 people.

Geography
The Yon River flows southward through the commune and crosses the town.

La Roche-sur-Yon experiences an oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification Cfb). La Roche-sur-Yon has an average annual temperature of 12.4 °C (54.3 °F). The wettest month is November, with 885.5 mm of rain falling on average each year. On average, August is the hottest month, with temperatures around 19.5 °C (67.1 °F), and January is the coldest, with temperatures around 6.1 °C (43.0 °F).

Trains run between La Roche-sur-Yon and Nantes, Paris, Les Sables-d’Olonne, Bordeaux, and several regional destinations. The A87 motorway connects anger and Les Sables-d’Olonne, and the A83 motorway connects Nantes and Niort.

The 2014 French table tennis championship was held in La Roche-sur-Yon in 2014
Over the weekend of 31 January – 2 February 2014, La Roche-sur-Yon’s Vendéspace hosted one of the first-round Davis Cup matches. World Group quarterfinals were on the line as France hosted Australia.
It will be the first time that a roller hockey World Cup will be held in France, as La Roche-sur-Yon will host the 2015 FIRS Men’s Roller Hockey World Cup.

Place Napoléon
One of the largest public esplanades in France, Place Napoléon is the perfect place to start your visit to La Roche-sur-Yon. There is an equestrian statue of the emperor in the middle of a gigantic plaza with avenues and water gardens.
Les Animaux de la Place
The water gardens on Place Napoleon have found a wonderfully imaginative use in La Roche-sur-Yon. Several animatronic machines designed by François Delarozière can be found in the ponds.
Église Saint-Louis
Completed in 1817, the striking Neoclassical church stands out on Place Napoléon. Six smooth Tuscan columns support the entrance facing the square, while the corinthian columns supporting the hollow interior are fluted and have dainty foliate capitals.
Haras de la Vendée
