It is the capital of the Charente-Maritime department and a coastal city in southwestern France. The city has been a center for fishing and trade since the 12th century, reflected in its Vieux Port (old harbor) and its vast, modern Les Minimes marina. Medieval houses and Renaissance architecture can be seen in the old town, and passageways are covered in arches from the 17th century.
La Rochelle was once occupied by the Gallic tribe of the Santones, who named the nearby region of Saintonge and the city of Saintes after them.
During the Roman occupation, the Romans produced salt along the coast. Their wine production was also developed, and their products were shipped throughout the empire. Roman villas have been found in Saint-Éloi and Les Minimes, and salt evaporation ponds have been discovered during the same time.
La Rochelle was founded in the 10th century and became an important harbor in the 12th century. Known initially as Rupella, the name comes from a Latin diminutive meaning ‘little rock.’ Rocella and Roscella were later known as the town before its current name. Aquitaine’s Duke Guillaume X defeated Isambert de Châtelaillon in 1130, and Châtelaillon’s harbor was destroyed, resulting in the establishment of La Rochelle as a harbor. A free port was established for La Rochelle by Guillaume X in 1137, and the commune was officially renamed La Rochelle.
Fifty years after her father promulgated the communal charter, Eleanor of Aquitaine upheld it. La Rochelle was appointed a major city for the first time in French history, Guillaume de Montmirail. Besides 24 municipal magistrates, Guillaume was assisted by 75 nobles who had jurisdiction over the residents. This communal charter granted the city many privileges, including the right to mint its coins and to operate some businesses free of royal taxes. These factors encouraged the growth of the entrepreneurial middle class.
La Rochelle and its surrounding area is composed of limestone layers dating back to the Sequanian stage (upper Oxfordian stage) of the Jurassic period (circa 160 million years ago) when most of France was submerged. Many small marine fossils in the white cliffs border the sea, which contains many of these layers. A thick white rock formed during relatively warm seas alternates with highly fragile layers containing sand and mud, formed during colder periods, and with coatings of various corals, formed during warmer, tropical periods. As a result, limestone is traditionally used as the primary building material throughout the region.
Summers in La Rochelle are pleasant, winters are cold and windy, and it is partly cloudy throughout the year. A typical year-round temperature ranges between 38°F and 76°F, rarely falling below 28°F or rising above 87°F. Mid-June to mid-September is the best time to visit La Rochelle for warm-weather activities.

With its postcard-pretty Old Port, La Rochelle is the capital of the Charente-Maritime region. Many artists have been inspired by the old port, protected by the Chaîne tower and the Saint-Nicolas tower. Visitors are invited to stroll along the beautiful narrow streets of the old town after walking on the quays.
France’s favorite holiday spot, with its wealth of history and proximity to charming islands, is this beautiful port city on the Atlantic coast.
La Rochelle’s harbor is the first thing you see when you arrive. Not only is it beautiful, but it demonstrates the city’s close relationship with the ocean. On Quai Duperré, you can admire the iconic view of the Tour Saint-Nicolas and Tour de la Chaîne, painted by countless artists such as Corot, Signac, and Vernet.
The taller of the two towers, Saint-Nicolas has protected the harbor for five centuries. A 42-meter tall building named for the patron saint of sailors and fishermen, the structure is deceptively large.
Located a few steps from Tour de la Chaîne, Tour de la Lanterne is La Rochelle’s latest tower. A decorative octagonal spire crowns an older and more austere circular base of this 15th-century tower and serves a defensive purpose.
Stroll along cobblestone streets worn smooth by centuries of walkers behind the Old Port. During the siege of La Rochelle by Louis XIII in the 1620s, a statue of Jean Guiton sits in the square in front of the city hall.
Visitors can take a simulated submarine dive to the depths of the underwater world at La Rochelle’s Aquarium.
As navigators and explorers have returned from expeditions for several hundred years with all kinds of strange objects, it is no coincidence that La Rochelle has a top-notch Natural History Museum. Almost unchanged, the Lafaille Cabinet of Curiosities is the oldest surviving natural history cabinet in France and is displayed virtually unchanged in this museum.
A majestic gate on the west side of Quai Duperré adds to the historical splendor of the old port. You enter La Rochelle through the central waterside opening in the medieval walls below the Gross-Horloge.
Although the city isn’t traditionally known for its beaches, there are three just minutes away from the Old Port. There’s a large grassy patch at the back of the beach that keeps the wind and currents at bay.
This museum houses vintage automata from around Europe, many dating back to the 1800s. As well as robots from the 1920s to the 1950s, there are moving advertisements from the 1920s to the 1950s. Some automatons are from fairs, while others were window displays at shops (now displayed along a street scene).
Located along Rue des Augustins, Maison Henri II is a 1555 Renaissance house hidden in a courtyard. This house’s name has nothing to do with the king but its style.
