About 300 km west-southwest of Paris, Laval is the capital of the Mayenne department in western France. Those who live there are known as Lavallois. Without the metropolitan area, the commune of Laval proper is the 7th most populous in the Pays de la Loire region and the 132nd most populated in France.
Toponymy
Laval was founded relatively recently compared to other French cities. As a result, there are no official references to the borough before the 11th century. Medieval chroniclers portrayed the citizens of Laval as the descendants of Charles Martel’s grandson Wala of Corbie, according to legend glorifying the Counts of Laval. From the chroniclers’ accounts, Laval should be synonymous with “Vala” or “Valla”-the two spelling variants of “Wala.”
Location
Laval is located at the geographic center of the Mayenne department, between Rennes and Le Mans, on the road linking Paris to Brittany. Located on the middle course of the Mayenne, a river that originates in Normandy and runs towards the Loire through the Mayenne department.
Laval is approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Rennes, 75 kilometers (47 miles) from Le Mans and Angers, 130 kilometers (81 miles) from Nantes, 135 kilometers (84 miles) from Tours, 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Caen, and 280 kilometers (174 miles) from Paris. Located on the English Channel, it is also 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Le Mont-Saint-Michel and the surrounding sea resorts.

Climate
Because of its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel, Laval has an oceanic climate. A typical winter here is wet, with few frosts and snowfalls, while a typical summer is warm and sunny, with occasional rain.
History
Laval’s coat of arms is argent with a lion passant guardant. Laval’s coat of arms belonged to the family, not the city. In 1211, when the direct branch of the family died, and in 1464, several members enabled the town to use their arms.
It is sometimes associated with the town of Laval that the House of Laval had a motto, Eadem mensura (“of the same measure”).
The municipality adopted a logotype in 1987, replaced in 2010 by a new one featuring a heraldic lion and a palindrome as symbols. To suggest the palindrome, the final “L” of “Laval” is held by the lion and reversed in this logotype.
Laval existed in the 11th century when the castle was built. Because of its location on a Roman road connecting Le Mans to Corseul, a provincial capital in modern-day Brittany, the site was already a thoroughfare. Additionally, some parts of the city’s territory had been settled by Gauls. For example, there has been an unearthing of a Gallic stele in Pritz, north of the city center. It was first mentioned in 710 that Pritz had a chapel. During a Norman invasion in Brittany, Tudwal’s body is believed to have been brought to Laval in 870 or 878.

Twenty-seven primary schools, eight middle schools, and seven high schools are located in the city (écoles primaires, collèges, and lycées).

There are foundries and fine linen manufacturers in the town. In addition to the Laval and Mayenne Technology Park, Laval is also home to companies working in electronics, computing and peripherals, food technology, veterinary pharmaceuticals, virtual reality, audiovisual production, patents, marketing, and a resource center.
It produces cheeses, ultra-high-temperature milk processing, and yogurt as an essential dairy center. Lactalis’ headquarters are located here.
