Le Havre Overview
The city of Le Havre is located in the Normandy region of northern France in the Seine-Maritime department. On the Channel, southwest of the Pays de Caux, on the right bank of the Seine estuary, it lies very close to the Prime Meridian.
Location
Le Havre is 50 kilometers (31 miles) west of Rouen at the mouth of the Seine and on the English Channel. There are several roads leading to Le Havre, the main ones being the A29 autoroute from Amiens and the A13 autoroute from Paris.
Geology
The Paris Basin, formed during the Mesozoic period, is where Le Havre is located. Sedimentary rocks make up the Paris Basin. A natural cliff edge separates the commune of Le Havre into two parts: one in the lower part of the town, including the harbor, the city center, and the suburbs, and another in the upper part of the town. In the 16th century, marshes and mudflats were drained, and the city was built. A few meters of seine sand or alluvium cover the soil. A meter of flattened rubble was used as a foundation to rebuild the city center after the Second World War.

Climate
The climate of Le Havre is temperate and oceanic due to its location on the Channel coast. It is rare to have a day without wind, and Maritime influences are present throughout the year. On 24.9 days per year, the temperature drops below 0 °C (32 °F) at the meteorological station of Cap de la Heve (from 1961 to 1990) and rises above 25 °C (77 °F) on 11.3 days.
Transport
There is a dense network of transportation within the city and the metropolitan area. In this way, the upper and lower towns are connected by long boulevards, winding roads, steps, a funicular, and the Jenner tunnel, which solves the problem of a break between the lower and upper towns.
History
Franciscopolis was named after Francis I of France when it was founded in 1517. Consequently, it was called Le Havre-de-Grâce (“Harbor of Grace”; hence Havre de Grace, Maryland). As a result of silting, the ancient harbors of Honfleur and Harfleur were no longer helpful.
The harbor is inextricably linked to the history of the city. Le Havre began to grow as trade from the West Indies was added to that from France and Europe in the 18th century. As a tribute to the recently deceased Jean-Paul Marat, considered a martyr of the French Revolution, the city changed its name to Hâvre-Marat on 19 November 1793. The name Hâvre-Marat was changed once more to Le Havre, its modern name, on 13 January 1795, as Marat’s memory faded. As an industrial center, it grew throughout the 19th century.
As a transit port at the end of World War I, Le Havre played an essential role in winding up affairs.
Five thousand people were killed, and 12,000 homes were destroyed in the Battle of Normandy before Operation Astonia captured the city. As a result of Auguste Perret’s renovations, the center now has a modernist style.
Toponymy
Before François founded it in 1516, the town was named le Hable de Grace and then Ville de Grace two years before its official founding in 1489. Franciscopolis, a learned and short name in tribute to the same king, is encountered in some documents as Havre Marat, which refers to Jean-Paul Marat during the French Revolution. That explains why we did not restore the complementary determinant -de-Grace.
Schools
The Academy of Rouen houses Le Havre. The city operates 55 kindergartens (254 classes) and 49 primary schools (402 courses). There are 16 colleges managed by the department and nine schools managed by the region of Normandy. Eleven colleges are in a priority education zone (ZEP) in Caucriauville, including Jules Valles college. In 2011, Claude Bernard college opened as a boarding school of excellence. Le Havre’s first college dates back to the 16th century, and the high school François I was founded during the Second Empire.
Sports
There are three professional sports teams in Le Havre: the first is the Le Havre A.C. football team, which played in Ligue 1 from 2008–2009 and is now in Ligue 2. A second central sports team is Saint Thomas Basketball, which competes in the LNB Pro A. Thirdly, it is the HAC women’s team, which has many international players.
Economy
Despite its development and diversification, the local economy relies heavily on industrial sites, international groups, and subcontracted SMEs. Paris and major European economic cities are the main decision centers for the Le Havre economy. The city has relatively low numbers of head offices, except for some local financial success stories such as Sidel Group (now a Tetra Pak subsidiary) – a distributor of interior furniture, and Delmas, a shipowner recently acquired by CMA-CGM.
Industry
Several industries are located in the industrial-port area north of the estuary and east of Le Havre. Renault, a public company in Sandouville, is the largest industrial employer in the Le Havre region, with 2,400 employees. Petrochemicals are the second most important industry in the industrial zone, and more than a third of French refining capacity is located in the Le Havre region. Over 3,500 researchers work in public and private laboratories, producing about half of the essential plastics and 80% of additives. Most of the chemical companies are in Le Havre and Montivilliers, as well as Sandouville, where Goodyear Chemicals Europe is located. In the Le Havre area, 28 industrial establishments manufacture plastics, many of which are classified as SECESOs.
