Le Mans Overview
The city of Le Mans is located in northwestern France. The 24 Hours of Le Mans Museum tells the story of the city’s famed motor race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. History
Vindinium, a sub-tribe of the Aedui, was the capital of the Aulerci, which Claudius Ptolemy first mentioned. The city of Le Mans is also known as Civitas Cenomanorum or Cenomanus (City of the Cenomani). The ancient Roman province of Gallia Lugdunensis included their city, which the Romans seized in 47 B.C. It is still possible to see ruins of a theater dating back to the 3rd century. As a result of the city’s defensive walls being built during the third century, the thermae was destroyed. Le Mans is one of the few Gallo-Roman city walls that have survived.
Cenomanus, after dissimilation, became Celmans as French replaced late Vulgar Latin in the area. The French word cel- meant “this” and “that,” so it was replaced with le, which means “the.”
Le Mans, the principal city of Maine, was the scene of battles in the eleventh century between Anjou’s counts and Normandy’s dukes. A Norman invasion of England was successful when William the Conqueror gained control of Maine. A revolt by the citizens of Maine in 1069 resulted in Hugh V being proclaimed the count of Maine as a result of the expulsion of the Normans. Matilda of England was married in the cathedral by Geoffrey V of Anjou. This is where Henry II Plantagenet was born, king of England. Henry landed in England with an army in 1154 to challenge his uncle Stephen for the throne. Members of that feudal force were known by the surname ‘del Mans’ (Latin for of Mans, as the city, was then known.) There are references to one such man in medieval records of Gloucester, Walter del Mans, whose name was accompanied by ‘Cenomanus’ by the medieval scribe so that Walter’s origin is evident. The surname Mans (later commonly spelled Manns) couldn’t be found anywhere other than Gloucestershire and Herefordshire in the English censuses until the twentieth century, which reflects the original settlement patterns of Henry’s followers from Le Mans in the Welsh Marches. The escheator of Hereford 1399-1400 was John Mans/Manns. Dodenham, Worcestershire, was held by one family from Mans. 96, Item in the Calendar of the Records of the Corporation of Gloucester, ca. 1200; Fine Roles Henry III, 23 August, ca. 1233; ‘Parishes: Doddenham,’ A History of the County of Worcester, volume 4 (1924), pp. 260–62.) The Angevin period saw continued relations between England and Le Mans.
