Vienna is the capital of Austria in Europe. It has a long history that includes music, art, and psychology. Famous people lived here like Mozart, Beethoven, and Sigmund Freud. There are also palaces including Schoenbrunn, which is the most famous palace in Vienna. The MuseumsQuartier district is a beautiful area with many historical and current buildings set around Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. The works they display are remarkable.
Leeuwarden (or older variants of the name) was initially used to refer to Nijehove, the most important of the three villages (the other two being Oldehove and Hoek), which in the early 9th century became Leeuwarden (Villa Lintarwrde c. 825). The origins of the city’s name still need to be determined. A total of over 200 spelling variants have been compiled by historian and archivist Wopke Eekhoff, including Leeuwarden (Dutch), Liwwadden (Stadsfries), and Ljouwert (West Frisian).
House remains that date back to the Roman era were discovered during an excavation near the Oldehove in the 2nd century A.D. Since the 10th century, the city has been continuously inhabited; its first mention in German sources dates back to 1285, and it received city privileges in 1435. A major maritime trade center, it was located along the Middelzee. By the 13th century, the waterway had silted up.
The oldest building in the city is the Grote Jacobijnerkerk (English: Great Jacobin Church). There were two opposing Frisian factional parties in the 15th century: Vetkopers and Schieringers. The bastions and moats were constructed between 1481 and 1494. The last stadtholder in the Stadhouderlijk Hof was William IV, Prince of Orange, in 1747. The fortifications were demolished in the first half of the 19th century.
Apart from Amsterdam, Leeuwarden was home to one of the earliest Jewish communities in the Netherlands, established in 1645. Jacob the Jew (in Dutch) was granted permission to build a Jewish cemetery by the city council in 1670, which means enough Jews were living there to require a graveyard and other communal institutions. In 1679, land near Oldehove tower was purchased for ‘The Jodenkerkhof’ (Jews’ cemetery).
As well as the synagogue, the city’s first Catholic church was built in the 17th century because Protestant authorities had forbidden Catholics from creating their own houses of worship. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Jewish community generally enjoyed good relations with authorities, reaching a peak of 1,236 in 1860.
The coat of arms of Leeuwarden is the municipality’s official symbol. An escutcheon, a gold lion, and a crown make up its design. Because “Leeuw” is Dutch for “Lion,” Leeuwarden’s seal features a lion. According to some sources, the lion may have been added only after the city received its official name, suggesting that its oldest name might conceal a reference to water rather than an animal. Alternatively, the coat of arms may have been a gift from the powerful Minnema family to the city.
Leeuwarden lies at the center of the province of Friesland, and near the city’s northwest corner lies the military base Leeuwarden Air Base. De Groene Ster is a nature reserve and recreational area located east of the town, and the Himriksmole windmill, golf course, and AquaZoo Friesland are all located there.
