Leiden Overview

Leiden is a city in the Dutch province of South Holland. It’s known for its centuries-old architecture and Leiden University, the country’s oldest university. The University of Leiden houses the Hortus botanicus Leiden Botanical Garden, where an early Dutchman and researcher planted the tulip. The museum displays work by Dutch Masters, including Rembrandt and his famous work depicting Van Gogh’s paintings.

Population

History

Leiden is famous for its history and how it was founded. The city was built on an artificial hill at the confluence of rivers Oude and Nieuwe Rijn that would form modern-day Leiden, making it one of the oldest cities in the world. The name “Leitha” comes from German origin, meaning “Canal.” It is catchy and new.

Leiden was once mistakenly thought to be a Roman outpost in the past. The Lugdunum castellum was supposed to be located at the Burcht of Leiden, and the city’s name is derived from Latin. On the other hand, the castellum was closer to the town of Katwijk and was called Milo.

Leiden, situated on a hill in the center of a stronghold, originally had the Bishop of Utrecht as its landlord, but then it switched to the county of Holland. At that point, in 1101, the county was named after an area nearby that served as a valuable domain for Holland.

Leiden was sacked in 1047 but continued to thrive. One of its better-known residents is Ada, who took refuge in Leiden while fighting a civil war against her uncle Prince William I, and he besieged the stronghold and captured her.

Leiden was granted city rights in 1266. By 1359, its population had grown to about 4,000 people.
