Lelystad Overview
It is the capital of the province of Flevoland and a municipality in the center of the Netherlands. Cornelis Lely, a Dutch engineer who engineered the Afsluitdijk, made it possible to build the city on reclaimed land.
History
The city of Lelystad sits on the former Zuiderzee seabed. This wetland was inhabited about 6500 years ago; the Netherlands has gradually subsided. The oldest human skeletons in Western Europe were discovered near Lelystad at Swifterbant. Floods and rising water levels washed away the peatlands, and the Lacus Flevo (in Roman times) became the Almere (Middle Ages) and the Zuiderzee. From Amsterdam to the Hanseatic League cities and the North Sea, the Zuiderzee (Southern Sea) was the main transport route. As a result of the many shipwrecks in Flevoland, Lelystad now houses the National Centre for Maritime History and the Batavia replica shipyard.
Zuiderzee Works continued construction after World War II, constructing the Eastern Flevoland polder. Several construction islands were built in the middle of the IJsselmeer in 1950. Lelystad-Haven was the largest island, and its wooden barracks housed a dyke-building community. It was not until 1955 that they reached the mainland, making it possible to drive to Lelystad by car. The diesel-powered Wortman pumping station in Lelystad-Haven was one of three pumping stations used in June 1957 to drain the polder. On the former construction island, Lelystad was inhabited only by technical engineers, laborers, and superintendents until 1967.
Landscape
Lelystad is the second largest municipality in the Netherlands regarding the area, but most are water: IJsselmeer and Markermeer. Oostvaardersplassen, a famous nature park that originated naturally when the polders of South Flevoland were drained, is another central area. A square of woodlands and gardens surrounds Lelystad and flat farmland.
