Levice Overview
In the western part of Slovakia, Levice is a town. The town is located on the left bank of the lower Hron river. It was initially called Leva, which means “the Left One” in Old Slavic.
The town is located in the north-eastern corner of the Danubian Lowland (Podunajská nížina), about 110 kilometers (68 miles) east of Bratislava, 40 kilometers (25 miles) south-east of Nitra, 32 kilometers (20 miles) south-west of Banská *tiavnica, 55 kilometers (34 miles) south-west of Zvolen and 25 kilometers (16 miles) from the border with Hungary.
History
In 1156, Levice was referred to as Leua, a village belonging to the parish of St. Martin’s Church in Bratka (Hungarian: Baraka). It was a member of the Tekov Committee (Bars).
1544 was the first time the Turks attacked and burned the town while leaving the castle unharmed. Lower Hungary’s captaincy was based in the settlement between 1581 and 1589. From 1663 to 1685, the Turks controlled the town, and Leva was part of the Uyvar eyalet under Ottoman rule.
As the Austrian Imperial Army led by General de Couches fought beneath Levice’s castle in the summer of 1685, Ottoman rule ended.
As part of the anti-Habsburg revolution of 1709, kuruces blew up the fort. In 1920, the town became a part of Czechoslovakia after Austria-Hungary broke up. The city was again a part of Hungary from 1938 to 1945 after Czechoslovakia was broken up under the Munich Agreement. It was returned to Czechoslovakia at the end of the Second World War. Present-day Slovakia absorbed it in 1993.

It has eight elementary schools (7 secular, 1 Hungarian, and 1 Roman Catholic), a gymnasium Andreja Vrabla, a public high school, a Hungarian Calvinist high school (Lyceum), a Business Academy, a Pedagogical and Social Academy, a Secondary Technical School, a Secondary Agricultural School, and various apprentice schools.
