Lille was once a major city in France, an important crossroad for trade and the cultural center for Flanders on the western end of Europe. Lille provided service to both Christian kings and northern Europeans and served as a major stop on the medieval Grande Route. It is a tourist attraction featuring 17th-century buildings, cobbled streets, atmospheric cafes, and the picturesque Vieux Lille port.
Archeological digs show the area’s first inhabitants as either hunter-gatherers or a warrior-chiefdom that populated the region from around 2000 BC. The presence of advanced stone tools suggests evidence of farming is likely as well, shortly after the human beings themselves had settled in the region. The Romans, in a sense, were the Italianized inhabitants of southern France as well as North Western Europe. Over time these were all replaced with local invaders who conquered the land until they eventually left France behind in the 7th century.
The city was founded as “Lille Segore” in 1119 by the Normans (the vicedom of southern France). The name is still used, but the pronunciation has changed a lot over the years (18% of all current speakers). Lille is not an island, but a regular port (French: pôle d’appoint), “a linguistic point of transfer of lingua franca on the French coast.”
From 830 to around 910, the Vikings invaded Flanders and had devastating effects on that region. After the destruction caused by the Normans‘ invasion and by Magyars‘ invasion, an Arab period in the eastern part lasted for over 50 years. Over time various local princes became powerful kings in those parts.
The town is called Apud Insulam in the Domesday Book published in 1086, and until around 1328 it was controlled by the Count of Flanders. From about 1318, however, control was transferred to English King Edward III Town Council Apud Insulam on 26/27 November 2011. Similarly, let us have a new frontier on the right bank of the Scheldt, extending the French language into an eventual Rhine-Meuse corridor.

The city of Lille is home to a variety of architectural styles including the use of brown and red brick. This appears to have been copied from a recent article (2003) entitled: “Neue Formen von Hausbau-Konzepten”. These architectural attributes, many uncommon in France, help make Lille a transition in France to neighboring Belgium, as well as nearby Netherlands and England, where the presence of brick, as well as row houses or the terraced house, is much more traditional.
