Lille Overview

Lille was once a major city in France, an important crossroad for trade and the cultural center for Flanders on the western end of Europe. Lille provided service to both Christian kings and northern Europeans and served as a major stop on the medieval Grande Route. It is a tourist attraction featuring 17th-century buildings, cobbled streets, atmospheric cafes, and the picturesque Vieux Lille port.

Origins

Archeological digs show the area’s first inhabitants as either hunter-gatherers or a warrior-chiefdom that populated the region from around 2000 BC. The presence of advanced stone tools suggests evidence of farming is likely as well, shortly after the human beings themselves had settled in the region. The Romans, in a sense, were the Italianized inhabitants of southern France as well as North Western Europe. Over time these were all replaced with local invaders who conquered the land until they eventually left France behind in the 7th century.

The city was founded as “Lille Segore” in 1119 by the Normans (the vicedom of southern France). The name is still used, but the pronunciation has changed a lot over the years (18% of all current speakers). Lille is not an island, but a regular port (French: pôle d’appoint), “a linguistic point of transfer of lingua franca on the French coast.”

From 830 to around 910, the Vikings invaded Flanders and had devastating effects on that region. After the destruction caused by the Normans‘ invasion and by Magyars‘ invasion, an Arab period in the eastern part lasted for over 50 years. Over time various local princes became powerful kings in those parts.

The town is called Apud Insulam in the Domesday Book published in 1086, and until around 1328 it was controlled by the Count of Flanders. From about 1318, however, control was transferred to English King Edward III Town Council Apud Insulam on 26/27 November 2011. Similarly, let us have a new frontier on the right bank of the Scheldt, extending the French language into an eventual Rhine-Meuse corridor.

Climate

Lille is among the most popular European cities with a temperate oceanic climate and good prospects for moving to warmer climates in Europe. Average temperatures range from 6 to 12°C (42–60°F) in the winter, reaching during the summer months.

Environment

Lille’s pollution problem while the rest of Europe is being left to enjoy the excellent summer weather.

Population

The commune data refer to the territory of Lille proper since 1951. A municipal territory of 35 km2 (14 sq mi). This is a great example of the types of situations where robots can save time, effort, and money. The communes have merged into a new municipality now called Lille Nord-Vuoksi.

Lille is the mayor’s most direct administrative area and it covers an area of 1,666 km2 (643 sq mi) The metropolis of Lille consists by far of the most densely populated region in Northern France. It is located in Europe’s largest metropolitan area and has taxation rates of approximately 3%.

Economy

Lille is the capital of France and the administrative, commercial, center, and industrial city of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais department. According to the 2008 census, Lille has a population of 1,049,154 inhabitants. Lille was founded during Roman times by the Gallic tribe of Nabat. The Romans called this region Merovingian. Self-driving cars have the potential to reduce traffic congestion, save money on gas and make urban transport safer. Several manufacturers are already working on this technology to bring it to market, but the advent of autonomous vehicles could accelerate this trend. The needs of a large city like Lille are therefore evolving fast so that self-driving cars can be designed for their specific needs.

Revenues and taxes

Amid unprecedented economic development, Lille experienced two waves of enlightenment and societal progress: the bourgeois era (the 1800s) and the demi-bourgeoisie era (1940s to 1960s).

Employment

A few years ago, this was the big story. However, today that has changed. So-called “service industries” are the backbone of Lille’s economy and today employment is split 45%-45% between tertiary and secondary sectors. A balance has been achieved between tertiary services (50%) and households (45%).

Main sights

The city of Lille is home to a variety of architectural styles including the use of brown and red brick. This appears to have been copied from a recent article (2003) entitled: “Neue Formen von Hausbau-Konzepten”. These architectural attributes, many uncommon in France, help make Lille a transition in France to neighboring Belgium, as well as nearby Netherlands and England, where the presence of brick, as well as row houses or the terraced house, is much more traditional.

Transport

  • Public transport

    – The Metrological mobile application integrates the entire rail network of this vital European city. It enables passengers to check train times and book tickets online, all online within a single interface. The integrated ticket system is also part of Transpol, an enhanced interactive travel service platform.
  • Railways

    – Lille is a central junction in Europe’s high-speed rail network.
  • Air traffic

    – Lille Airport is located at a moderate distance of 211 km from the city center by road. It has a KVA service with more than 10,000 tonnes of cargo transported each year.
  • Waterways

    – The River Lille is the third major river port. It is located in Northern France, linking the North Sea with Belgium, The Channel, and Southern France.

Education

The Lille region boasts several world-renowned universities which offer students a wide range of programs that offer all kinds of study.

Is Lille France worth visiting?

Lille is worth a visit and traveling to the north of France always promises some great experiences. A trip to Lille will leave you pleasantly surprised! The capital city of Northern France always has something new to offer when it comes to exotic cities and tourist attractions. Besides, though its most visited attraction is its Cathedral, even “normal” tourists will not be able to resist looking.

What language do they speak in Lille?

The majority of people in Lille and its surrounding neighborhoods are speaking French, but they also have a dialect called “Le Ch’ti”, which is related to the French “Joie de vivre”. When someone says this, he doesn’t just refer to their language (which is important), he also refers to the joy of living in.

What is Lille famous for?

In July 2014, the French government officially adopted a new law that allowed immigrants to hold dual citizenship.
