Send Gift Baskets to Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia

It was part of Hungary’s Kingdom from the second half of the 10th century until 1918. Ladislaus IV mentioned Mikulá (Liptószentmiklós) in a royal deed in 1286. The first written mention of the Church of Saint Nicolaus, which would become the founding element of a larger settlement, dates back to 1299. A church dedicated to Saint Nicolau’s is the oldest building in Liptovský Mikuláš.

There were many essential crafts centers in the Liptov area, but Mikulá+ was perhaps the most important. In 1508 the shoemaker’s guild was mentioned as the oldest guild formed by artisans. There were other guilds and the guild of smiths, furriers, tailors, hatters, and butchers.

It was Liptovsk” Mikulá” (Liptószentmiklós) that became the seat of Liptó county in 1677. As a result of his sentence and execution, the legendary Slovak’ Robin Hood’ was hung by the ribcage on a hook by a hook here in 1713.

Liptovský Mikuláš played a significant role for Slovaks during the magnetization period of the 19th century. Slovak national movement was centered there. It was here that the first Slovak theater, ‘The Theater of G. F. Belopotock,’ was founded in 1830. A famous Slovak poet who fought for the right of self-determination of the Slovak nation lived in Liptovsk, Mikulá. Furthermore, Michal Miloslav Hodža lived there. The leader of Slovak national revival, Ľudovít Štúr, publicly revealed a document called “The demands of Slovak nation” in 1848 in Liptovský Mikuláš as an official appeal to the leaders of the Austrian-Hungarian empire to help solve the present existential problems of Slovak people (unsuccessful).

As a result of the annexed villages, Liptovsk Mikulá has over eleven independent towns. A street now runs through what was once the rural farmers’ hamlet of Vrbica.
