Lorient Overview

In western France’s Morbihan department, Lorient is a seaport and town.

History

Megalithic architecture in the area of Lorient dates back to around 3000 BC. The remains of Roman roads can verify the presence of Gallo-Romans in Vannes, Quimper, and Port-Louis.

Jean-Baptiste Colbert founded the French East Indies Company in 1664. The company was granted Port-Louis lands in June 1666, along with Faouédic on the other side of the roadstead. A company director, Denis Langlois, built slipways at the confluence of the Scorff and Blavet rivers. For the first few years, it served as a subsidiary of Port-Louis, where offices and warehouses were located. After a few years, the operation was almost abandoned, but the French East Indies Company scrapped the Le Havre base during the Franco-Dutch War and moved its infrastructure to the Enclot, from which Lorient developed. After constructing a chapel, workshops, forges, and offices, the company left Port-Louis permanently.

In 1669, a ship named Le Soleil d’Orient was constructed at the site, giving the city its name. Workers provided Lorient to the site, later abbreviated to L’Orient by workers.

Colbert de Seignelay, the son of the Secretary of State of the Navy, opened a base there in 1690. At the same time, Saint-Malo privateers took shelter there. In 1700, a law forced people to leave the domain to move to the Faouédic heath, which led to the town’s development. Approximately 6,000 people lived in Lorient in 1702, but the city began to decline as activities slowed.

Location

On the southern coast of Brittany, Lorient lies at the confluence of two rivers, Scorff and Blavet, before discharging into the Atlantic Ocean. A dam was constructed in 1967, stopping the flow of the river Ter into the estuary south of the city. There are 503 kilometers (313 miles) between the municipality and Paris, 153 kilometers (95 miles) between Rennes, and 158 kilometers (98 miles) between Nantes.

Climate

Lorient experiences a cool to warm oceanic climate based on the Köppen climate classification (Cfb). The amount of precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year. As in summer, days over 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) are rare in winter.

Population

Lorient had a population of 57,149 in 2017, and 203,309 people were living in its intercommunity Lorient Agglomeration in 2017. Even though Vannes is the prefecture, Lorient is the most populous commune in the Morbihan département. Lorientais are the people who live in Lorient.

Industry

Shipbuilding has been critical to the city since its founding.

The DCNS continues the legacy of the former state-owned Arsenal shipyards, which began operations in 1690. In addition to building warships, it also makes frigates. In addition to the fishing fleet, Keroman has a substantial industrial base.

Transport

The Lorient South Brittany Airport is located just west of the city at Lann Bihoue, with direct flights to Paris. In the summer, direct flights are also available to London and Porto.

Several regional destinations are accessible by rails from the Gare de Lorient, such as Quimper, Nantes, Rennes, and Paris (less than three hours by TGV).

Religion

The prominent religious landmarks in Lorient are Catholic churches. While the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption was built in 1850 in a revivalist neo-Gothic style, the church of Saint Joan of Arc was constructed in a neo-Roman style in the 1930s. A few years later, in 1955 by French architect Jean Desbois and with its four-meter-high concrete bell tower, Lorient’s modernist church was the highest point with its four meters. It is a major feast of the city to celebrate major Catholic festivals such as Christmas, Carnaval, Easter, and the Pardon.

What is Lorient known for?

Lorient, a city of art and history, commemorates distant epics of the East India Company in its name. Maritime history, nautical dynamism, its roads, and the Interceltique festival make it famous.

Best Things to Do in Lorient (France)

Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly

This interactive and child-friendly sailing museum is the only one of its kind in Europe. A high-profile exhibition focusing on long-distance racing and navigation takes place each year.

Keroman Submarine Base

This gigantic Nazi submarine base survived almost unharmed when most of Lorient was flattened by Allied bombing raids during World War II.

Tour de la Découverte

This 40-meter granite watchtower was built in 1786 to replace a smaller structure within the port enclosure. Although it looks like a lighthouse, it wasn’t designed to function as a lighthouse but rather to monitor port activity and keep an eye out for smugglers.

Espace Découverte du Sous-Marin Flore

The submarine base at Lorient also houses the Daphné-class craft Le Flore, launched in 1960 and active until 1989. A museum vessel was opened in 2010 after the submarine was dry-docked in one of the base’s concrete cavities.

Musée de la Compagnie des Indes

Ferries cross the Bay from Lorient to Port-Louis every half hour. To understand Lorient’s roots, you have to make this trip.

Hôtel Gabriel

If you’re visiting Lorient, check out the Hôtel Gabriel, which holds regular workshops and exhibitions. French East India Company’s sales rooms once occupied this 18th-century neoclassical palace in the port enclosure.

Keroman Port

A place like Lorient is appealing to many visitors simply because of the opportunity to observe all the activity of an actual port city. France’s second most productive fishing port, Keroman, is just behind Boulogne-sur-Mer’s tonnage of fish caught.

F.C. Lorient

Despite almost impossible odds, F.C. Lorient has held on to the top tier of French football for many years. During that time, they developed some future France internationals, including Laurent Koscielny and Kevin Gameiro.

Notre-Dame-de-Victoire Church

The rebuilding of the cathedral was done in the modern style during the post-War period. Even though this architecture lacks the charisma of more historic cities, a few monuments are worth checking out.

Groix Island

This second-largest island in the region can be accessed by ferry from Lorient, and a few nights here would be well worth the trip.
