Ancient settlements, from their beginning in the Finnish Bay 9,000 years ago and continuing to this day, show that the history of settlements has always been about settling where nature goes. Without those rocks and stone walls and the remains of ancient tools the area would look very different. This time of year, you will find glaciers near the coasts of Estonia with a unique type of stone called Norwegian granite. These boulders were created over thousands of years and can be found near multiple rivers and lakes in the area.

So our boulders were ‘imported’ from Scandinavia. As you can see, all the local soil is strewn with these boulders. The Earth pushes up to the surface more and more stone traces of the post-ice age every spring when crops are planted here. That’s why all the work in the field is started here as well.

Their food was meager and they lived in barracks, but they were happy to help rebuild the country after World War 2.
