Maastricht Overview

Maastricht is a university city with medieval architecture and a vibrant cultural scene. In the cobbled old town of Maastricht, you will find a Gothic-style church known as Sint Janskerk and a Romanesque Basilica known as Servatius. Along the riverside sits an impressive futuristic building called Bonnefanten.

Toponymy

Maastricht’s first mention in ancient documents comes from the year 575, and it was mentioned again in 634, 945, and 1051.

The name Maastricht is a compound and a shortened version of the Dutch word ‘Masaem’ which means ‘the Meuse River. It also comes from the Latin words’ trajectory and ‘Ultimus,’ which make it so magical, so this name of yours has origins worldwide. The later addition of Maas “Meuse” u/s the confusion with the -Utrecht of Utrecht, which had the same original form and etymology. According to medieval documents, the Latin name for Maastricht first appears in 13th-century documents. It is unknown what the ancient name of this city might have been. The people of Maastricht often refer to themselves as Mestreechteneer or Sjeng, depending on the dialect. Much of it is derived from the formerly popular French name Jean.

Early history

Neanderthal remains have been found in a cave near Maastricht. They dated back to roughly 25,000 years ago and were likely part of the Palaeolithic period, and Celts lived here around 500 BC, as found by archaeological findings.

It is unknown when the Romans arrived in Maastricht or whether they founded the settlement. The Romans built a bridge across the Meuse in the 1st century A.D. The bridge was one of the most critical roads in Roman times, connecting Bavay to Cologne. It dates back to the 6th century A.D. but could’ve been built as early as the 2nd Century B.D. Remains of a Roman road and religious shrine, a Roman bath, and a granary were found along with houses dating back to the 4th Century A. Fragments of ancient Roman sculptures, coins, and other objects are on display in a gallery in the center (Centre Céramique) of Maastricht.

Reportedly, Saint Servatius, a bishop by trade, died in 388 AD. He was buried on the Roman road outside the city gates, where he set up his church. In 570, Gregory of Tours was commissioned to build the first stone church on the grave of Saint Servatius. His work ended in 678, and today, known as the Basilica of Saint Servatius, it is seen worldwide. Aachen lost its diocese to Liège in the 8th or 9th century.

Border

Maastricht borders Belgium but has a slight edge with its Francophone neighbor to the south. The countries on this side of the region are part of Europe’s Schengen Area, allowing unrestricted travel without having to bother with passport control.

Climate

Maastricht features the same environment as most of the Netherlands, and it goes from arid summers to cool, humid winters with a long dry season settled between rainfall months. However, due to its isolated highland location, summers tend to be much warmer and winters a bit cooler. The difference is only noticeable in the Meuse valley, which is located 70 meters below the station. On July 25, the highest temperature ever recorded reached 39.6 °C.

Population

122,397 (2015)

Religion

The percentage of the population that identifies as religious in Maastricht increased over the past seven years. However, Roman Catholics still account for 60% of the people, and a 13% increase can be seen in those who attend religious ceremonies at least once a month.

  • Maastricht is represented by the Dutch football (soccer) team, Mijdrechtse Voetbal Vereniging Maastricht. It plays in the Dutch first division of the national competition (the second league after the Eredivisie).
